holly 2 barrel

holly 2 barrel

Postby raidinator » Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:39 am

Hey I'm pretty new to this forum but not to the 2.6. As many have, I have come to despise the mikuni carb and intend to replace it. everyone seems to be running a midsized weber which is a bit pricey in my opinion. I have noticed a few 2.6 cars running 2 barrel holleys. Is there a reason that is not the standard? they seem simpler, more well supported and are available in more sizes. do they flood on steep inclines or something? I am able to produce an adapter if I need to so that is not an issue are there any other reasons?

There was a holley 5200 carb used on some 2.6s in the early 80s; its actually a holley weber. Its not a standard because its an emission carb and had its own set of annoying problems to deal with, as well as being more money. Its not a lot of money if you consider you put it on, set it up and drive; they are the best solution for the mikuni, which is a work-alike to the weber.

Wow, thank you for responding so quickly, I that's really cool information I guess this was more what i had envisioned when i posted the question

http://www.jegs.com/p/Holley/Holley-Kei ... 6/10002/-1

I see what you mean about the weber being a workalike it makes it a true bolt on so that makes sense. My thought is that the holly is available for about 150 on ebay so will it work? and I wonder if i could use it as a blow through carb?
thanks again for the quick response

i came across a guy that put a small carter 2 barrel on his 88 2.6 4x4, it ran rich as hell turned all the way back and got horrible gas milage. this was on a fresh built long block, be bought a weber 32/36 and put on it and it ran twice as good and didnt run near as rich with alot better mpgs...just food for thought

so i found that a weber 38/38 flows 390 cfm (http://www.jtoutfitters.com/weber-carbu ... -4720.html) the holly is rated at 350cfm. it seems to me that if the 2.6 doesn't run rich with a weber 38 then it shouldn't run rich with the holly.

As far as the holly that was running rich, there are two 2barrels on that is 350cfm and a 500 cfm version. He might have been running the 500 cfm version

Are there any other reasons

Older Dodge/Plymouth Cars with the 2.2L also ran a Holley 2BBL

If i remember correctly the Holley on my '83 Plymouth Scamp GT (2.2L) is a 2250 or maybe it was 2150? It's a Progressive 2BBL like the Mikuni is. It would require a small "adapter" to block off the EGR though on a 2.6L Manifold

the holley regardless is way too big for these motors and no matter what carb you decide to put on and mess with its all about tuning as long as you are not over carbed, the nice thing about the weber is if you know about carbs and tuning you can supertune a weber to get pretty damn good mpg, have a weber on my 80 arrow with a 2.0 and getting almost 30 mpg and havent even jetted it down yet, its all about that if i was gonna really get crazy with getting good mpg and decided against propane i'd make an adapter and put a holley 1bbl on it and tune it up and could push probably 35mpg as long as i drove conservatively which i usually do, the 2bbl holley is too much carb for these little motors my 77 bb 400 ford had a holley 350 on it and it ran like a raped date, when it got worn out i got a 500cfm 2bbl holley and it really gets it on, it comes down to a few key things,
The motor build combo, i.e. the cam, pistons, valves etc, etc if all aren't put in the right combo its never gonna be a good motor no matter what carb you put on it
Your vehiclde weight and altitude you live at
And most important, tuning and the driver

the 2.6 does run rich with the weber 38 but youve made up your mind so no point in even talking about it anymore

The 38 dges is only good for the 2.6 with lot of mods; it is overkill for a stock 2.6. The stock mikuni is a 32/35, so a weber 32/36 is slightly larger secondary, that is why it works so well on these motors. the newer 34 webers could be even better due to smaller size and good if you need to pass smog.
