does anyone know the stock gearing differences between the diesel and gas 4x4 rigs. i assume there is some and if so is it in the diffs or in the tranny. in other words is the tranny the same (besides the hyr clutch control) and the gearing in the diffs or are the diffs the same and the gearing in the tranny is different.
thanks,
tom

These trucks came with a few dif gears for the differential. most came with 3.909, some with ~3.54 and some with ~4.xx

4.22 and 4.625 - Most are in the 2nd gen 9" rears of monteros, although some 3.0 V6 trucks had 4.22s in them. The 1 ton trucks also had 4.22s, but i'm not sure if they are 8 or 9" rear gears. Some vans also had 4.22s in an 8" gear.

ok, so you guys are saying the tranny is the same and the difference is in the diffs. the tranny in my gas truck is in much better shape, and i have to pull the engine/tranny to get to the rear seal on the diesel.
thanks,
tom

Yes the trannies are the same. Just remember to change the speedo gear to match the rear gears.

I changed a tranny once in my 85 with one from an 84 without the speedo gear change - it was 15 mph off low, 55 was really 70. Had to go to the dealer to get the right gear, tranny was scrapped by the garage before i realized the speedo gear was wrong. I now do my own tranny changes, so the parts don't get tossed.
