Any recommendations on new pistons for 4D55?

Any recommendations on new pistons for 4D55?

Postby pdub » Fri Jul 10, 2009 12:20 pm

Hi,

I'm working on rebuilding my 4d55, and am looking for a source of good pistons. I've seen a set of ITM pistons & rings on coolparts.com and that's about it. I spoke with Mike Warme, and he recommended getting chrome (or was it moly?) rings for longer life. He also recommended a set of pistons on ebay, but I haven't seen them, even when using the search terms he suggested.

Some questions:
Are the rings in the ITM piston & ring assembly (RY6314) chrome or plain? (or moly, even?)
Will the Sealed Power rings (WE596KC) fit the ITM pistons?

Thanks,

Peter

sorry all been a lil busy but, i used the itm complete set up off abay after splitting china piston in half "no fun" but if you can get some chromoloy rings they will not break like some of the others will, the factory ones and most aftermarket tend to break rings while in the motor. and there goes your compression. ya know we push over 300psi of cyl pressure.

Do you know if the ITM pistons come with pins? It looks like mitsubishiparts.com sells the OEMs with pins.

That's good to know about the ITM's. But I've decided to go with the OEM pistons, with aftermarket chrome rings. I called and confirmed that they had them.

So I ended up getting the stock pistons and the rings by Hastings.

I was a bit surprised when I put on the rings and found that one of them had the "top" marking on the wrong side!

It simply would not fit right in the groove. Then my buddy looked at it real close and notcied that the cross section looked upside down.

So just a little warning - don't just trust the markings - make sure your rings fit.
