318 swap

318 swap

Postby austin » Mon Dec 21, 2009 11:54 pm

I have an 86 with a 2.0. If I where to put a 318 in it what all would I need? What trans do I use if I want to keep it manual? Do I have to custom fab motor mounts? How much will I have to modify the driveshaft?

hey, some say that's the easyest v8 swap. mine are chevy, automatics. maybe you could reuse the mitsu 5 speed with an adapter, save a lot of work. if they can handle a 300 hp turbo motor, why not a 318?

340s were the better sm block mopar- much better piston to rod ratio and it flat out hauls- 360s were never as good. 340 darts and Challengers would stomp bb chevy camaros and chevelles all day long, so one in a D-50 will smoke anything short of a drag car. Not that I'm biased or anything...

I CANT SAY THE THE 318 IS THE SHITTEST ENGINE CHRYSLER EVER MADE THE 3.5 IN THE INTREPIDS GET MY VOTE FOR THAT ...BUT AS FAR AS YOUR SWAP GO WITH A 360 SURE THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY WEREN'T AS GOOD AS 340'S BUT CONSIDERING THE FIRST 360'S MADE IN 72 WHERE THE ONLY ONES THAT EVER HAD ANY REAL COMPRESSION AND DECENT STOCK HEADS BUT WERE STILL ONLY AVALIBLE IN LAND YAHTS AND TRUCKS AND EVER YEAR AFTER THAT EMISSIONS AND SMOG RESTRICTIONS BECAME HEAVIER AND COMPRESSION BECOME LOWER AND LOWER ..A BUILT 360 WILL MAKE MORE TORQUE THAN A COMPARIBLE 340..AND PLUS IT GOT 20 CUBES ON THE 340 AND WEIGHTS ALMOST THE EXACTLY THE SAME AND TAKES UP THE SAME AMOUNT OF SPACE ...AS FAR AS YOUR SWAP IF YOUR TRUCK WAS A AUTO IT CAME WITH A CHRYSLER 904 TRANNY I BELEIVE AND IF SO YOUR FACTORY SHIFTER AND DRIVESHAFT AND TRANS CROSSMENBER WILL WORK YOU JUST NEED A 904 TRANS FROM ANY OLDER RWD CHRYSLER VEHICLE THAT CAME WITH A SMALL BLOCK ... IF YOU DONT HAVE THIS STUFF PM ME I DO! ;) ANYWAYS YOU CAN USE A 4WD 80-86 RADITOR BUT YOU WILL HAVE THE RECESS IT INTO THE CORE SUPPORT. AS FAR AS MOUNTS GO YOU WILL HAVE TO CUT THE MOUNT TOWERS OFF YOUR TRUCKS ENGINE CROSSMEMBER USE FACTORY DODGE FULLSIZE TRUCK SMALL BLOCK BRACKETS MOUNTED TO THE FACTORY D50 TRUCK ENGINE MOUNT BOLTED TO THE FRAME VIA HOLES YOU WILL HAVE TO DRILL YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO CUT OUT THE CENTER SECTION FORNT CROSSMEMBER AND REPLACE IT WITH A 2X2 PIECE OF SQURE TUBING KEEPING IT MOVED AS FAR UP AS POSSIBLE ..USEING A CAR OIL PAN AND PICK UP ..AS FOR EXHAUST YOU CAN USE STOCK DODGE FULL SIZE TRUCK EXHAUST MANIFOLDS OR A SET OF CENTER DUMP BLOCK HUGGERS ..I CAN GET YOU IN TOUCH WITH A GUY WHO HAS DONE THIS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IF NEED BE ..AND THERE USED TO BE A GEOCITES WEBSITE THAT HAD A PICTURE TUTORIAL ON THIS BUT IS GONE NOW MAYBE IT CAN BE FOUND ON THE WAYBACK MACHINE AND TIED TO THIS WEBSITE OR THREAD http://www.geocities.com/ram50v8/swap.htm HOPE THIS HELPS

Because a 340 would be harder to find and more expensive. Is the 318 block smaller than a 340? I want to keep the truck manual.

THE 318 ,340 AND 360 ARE THE ALL THE SAME SIZE AND WEIGHT ALMOST THE SAME SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL GO FOR THE MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK ...KEEP THE TRUCK A FIVE SPEED WILL BE TOUGH ..THEY DIDN'T MAKE A BUNCH OF 5 SPEED TRANNY'S TO GO BEHIND A SMALL BLOCK CHRYSLER I THINK THE ONLY ONE I KNOW OF IS A NV2500? THEY USED THEM BEHIND V6/V8 FULL SIZE TRUCKS AND IN DAKOTAS I DON'T KNOW ABOUT TRANS TUNNEL FIT AND WHAT ELSE WILL HAVE TO BE MODIFIED ...

im with maxd50 i think a sbc or sbf swap would be better. ive owned them all and as far as endurance goes ford has been there for me but building raw horse power ive depended on chevy, and mopar well you can get both out of mopar if you spend alot of money. if i dont swap a v6 into my 88 macro cab im going to put a 302sbf in it

hey, did a little research, since there's a 305 chevy, and a 2.6 mitsu in the shop. mitsu flywheel is 12", chevy 153 tooth 12.75". the end of the crankshaft to the block is very close to the same. so chevy v8, flywheel & starter, chevy pressure plate. dodge clutch disc, mitsu wide trans. not sure about a pilot bearing. just a plate between the engine and trans. worth a try?
