Is it better or worse to start with a non turbo engine and turbo it?

If you want to do it right then you need to lower the compression. Start with a turbo engine, it will have all the nessary parts to start with.

It is best to start with a Turbo Motor, less having to find/make things that fit. I will disagree that you MUST lower the compression ratio. You have to run high to very high Octane fuel to keep the Knock Monster at bay if you don't. I raised the CR on my N/A 4G64 to 10:1 when I added the turbo. Strictly Racing and 110 Octane Gas
