So which is the reed valve, #1 or #2?

#1 is the valve. The first gen uses a simpler system. You can always test by pluging the rubber line that goes to the air cleaner. Pull the thing off and cap the end that goes to the valve. See how she runs then.

it is a air injection valve that goes from the air cleaner into the exhaust maniford to dilute the exhaust before the second cat. If it sticks open it causes a massive exhaust leak. If you don't have to deal with emissions, remove it and plug the fitting in the exhaust manifold.

I do have emissions here so I guess the unit stays.

I have checked the valve using another vacuum source and it seems to be working fine. I also tried plugging the tube and while there is a small effect on the idle, it doesn't cure my idle surging.

I'm back to square one.

If u have an idle surge its most likely a problem in the carb somewhere, where at I don't know but most of the time its somethin in the carb causing it.

Did you check all the vacuum lines to the control box on the fender by the carb. Mice like to crawl in there and eat the tubing where you can't see it. The tubing may also be cracked from age

First, I installed a Weber and the same problem occurred, although not as severely. But I think that would indicate it's not a carb problem.

Second, I have checked every inch of vacuum hose and can find no leaks. I also checked the intake manifold for leaks and found none.

I'm stumped, that's why I came here.

I know it appears to be a leak but the way it initially came and went makes me think it's a switch or something that finally gave out. But I'm just guessing.

If anyone is interested, I finally found the issue.

It was a leak at the intake manifold gasket.

Apparently I wasn't diligent enough when testing for leaks. I replaced the gasket and used a little ht sealer and it's running fine again.
