steering stops

So I was under my truck the other day and I noticed there are steering rack stops built into the frame. Is there any disadvantage to adjusting these out a bit for more angle?

I imagine that if you went to far youd end up busting a tie rod eventually, or something in your steering set up.

Ive debated about doing it to vehiciles before but havent done it to anything yet.

yeah i was worried about overloading the tie rods. Hopefully someone will chime in. Needing 3 lanes to make a u-turn sucks. hopefully I can adjust them out a bit. Drift angle ftw

You can adjust them. But they need to be the main hard point when turning. Otherwise all the force when turning hard. (like when doing a "U" turn) If you hit a curb you can snap the steering box or rip it off the frame. You can adjust them just make sure there is clearance for the tires, caliper, and some slack to the steering box. Don't use the steering linkage to be the stop or you will bend tie rods. Some times if adjusted too far the steering won't return on it's own. It will just keep going in circles.

Well I adjusted them out. Gained a half turn on the steering wheel from center to lock. Haven't driven it yet but i'll see how that goes tomorrow

nvm driving it tomorrow. flat tire sent me into a drift. I have another tire waiting to go on already so i'll give it a test then.

I think as long as your not at the very end of the adjustment you are ok. If you were to go all the way in, or remove the stops like said above, all the stress would be on flexible things like inner and outer tie rods, this way you have a solid resting point when you go lock-to-lock. Listen to your PS pump when you are lock to lock. make sure it dosent whine or sound like it is laboring very hard. If not i say go you!
