Anyone got a truck lying around with the steering gearbox out of it? My column has a lot of "slop" in the end that connects to the gear box and was wondering if thats normal when its unhooked from the gear box seeing as how its tilt wheel. Column is still bolted down.

try tightening your box first. it easy you need a 17mm wrench and a flat tip screwdriver if i remember correctly.now dont get too rammy or it will not want to return to center after a turn.

Im not talking about the steering box, im talking about the steering column itself. I can take the end inside the engine compartment and wiggle it around quite a bit.

That i don't know. It seems to come from farther back then the rubber joint right there. If i jiggle it, it will clunk around.

I think I figured it out. Seems to be missing the bushing and another part that I can't remember the name of on the end in the engine compartment. Time to order more parts from the dealer.

Instead of staring a new thread, I'm just going to ask it in the same one since its about steering as well. Anyone ever shortened a column before? Im putting the PS gearbox from my Starion in as the only ones I can find for the MM are 4x4 and they bolt to the other side of the frame. It bolts up to the stock location, but the shaft coming out of the box is longer which it turn puts the steering wheel farther back and into my fat ass. Im pretty sure this mother is a 1 piece so it shouldn't be hard at all. I'll probably do it the same way minitruckin did the drag link (cut the section out at an angle and weld with a sleeve). I might drill holes in the sleeve and fill with weld too.

I had the same problem... finding a PS gearbox on 'correct side' of the frame rail. But keep looking, you'll find it. It WILL NOT WORK, on the other side of the frame rail without changing out A LOT. Including the gearbox, steering rack, control arms, bushings, lines, ect. Just find one that fits on the correct side of the frame and save yourself a HUGE headache!
