Idle problems

Postby 4doorciv » Wed Aug 05, 2009 4:37 pm

First of all truck information:
1989 mightymax with a 4g63 turbo motor out of a 90 laser rs fwd. Web cams, skunkworks cam gears, walbro 255lph fuel pump, fal radiator fan, aem afpr, apexi avcr, sachs clutch kit, 1.8 waterneck, modified oem intake manifold, evo 8 fmic.

Truck only runs on 2 cylinders unless ecu is propped up a certain way, then runs on all 4 cylinders nut still won't hold idle. When it's cold, idle is around 900 then drops to a near stall and picks back up again. The avcr was installed in the laser before I removed the engine and stayed on the harness as it was wired back up. I am going to solder the avcr in place since it was installed with crimp connectors.

Directions as of now: make a boost leak tester as was suggested by a local dsm forum, and solder the avcr. All intercooler connections are secure from a visual check, wait for new tb gaskets from the dealer. Waiting on 2 silicone 90's from a local shop to eliminate an unsightly series or straight pipes angled to make a 45. Looking for suggestions. I'll try to post pictures when I get home from work. Posting on my iPhone right now.

reguarding your ECU problem, have you opened it up and checked for leakage inside yet?
the only time ive heard of a similar problem(on a different car) was water leaked into the ECU down the wires from a leaking windshield where it would stay and collect and would intermitenly short out its fuel injectors on random cylinders, or something like that.
just a though since im guessing you wouldve checked for loose conections and such.

Thanks for the reply. I actually did open up the ecu and found some kind of oxidation on the top of the board. Not too sure what to think of it because there is a blue sticker on the front that says it's rebuilt. Ase stamp, bunch of numbers. They thought it was alright.

I did fix the ecu problem by soldering the avcr wires on place of the crimp connectors. Shoulda seen some of the wires. The purple rpm wire splice and the brown ground splice to ecu were frayed really bad. The yellow wire to ecu actually pulled away from the crimp when I tried to remove the spade connection. I'd hit the thanks button if there was one.

Removed the tb and cleaned it. Biss port was clogged with carbon buildup. Discovered a cooling system leak. Hard to find it without a downpipe so going to wait for my co-worker to give me back my cooling system pressure tester rp102. Somewhere under the cas and running along the firewall so its a pinhole leak.

and took out the thermostate on a feeling it was installed at a slight angle by me or something.

Didn't fix it.

Found the coolant leak. Didn't push the firewall back far enough and the cap deteriorated from rubbing on the firewall :) Was a headache to get out. Remove the top section of the waterneck, drop drivers motormount, drop trans mount (the 2 bolts), prybar the motor forword which could only move 1/2 inch, somehow get to the hoseclam to remove the rubber cap, and remove the fitting. Got a 3/8 plug from home depo to replace the fitting. Late, raining, and drop light died. Gotta charge it. I'll find out tomorrow if any other problems pop up.

Still raining. :( Well, at least I got a/c in my hatchback. Doesn't help that it's dropped 4 inches. Still gotta tighten the plug, put the 2 bolts to trans mount, put back the intake piping, drivers engine mount, add water, and bolt down the hood.

Break in rain let me fix the truck. :) Had a little trouble with the mounts again but got it. Broke traction and blew off a hose. It Runs pretty good now. Now only have to do the downpipe and adjust timing.
