Radiator

Radiator

Postby LSR Mike » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:29 pm

with my excursions on the Bonneville Salt Flats, with a Turbo 4G64 in the Mighty Max. I found at the 2 mile mark my coolant temp was reaching 231 Degrees F. Ended up blowing coolant into the engine compartment, not to mention filling the overflow tank.
Running flat out for 3 miles turning 7000 RPM with 20lbs of boost heats things up a bit.

Now I'm having a custom radiator built to handle the cooling job.

Attached is a single plane drawing of the existing Radiator with dimensions they are building the new one from.

I'll have the new one in about 10 days. pix to follow.

I would hope you are running an electric fan. But keeping it off during your run. Fans heat up engines on race cars. It slows down the air flow when running. At least that is our expierance with them in the ram air flow.

Well It's here, a nice new Fluidyne triple core.

Sits about 1/2 inch higher than the original but shouldn't be a problem.

Now I need a petcock, New radiator cap, I have some idea's on how to attach the electric fan better. The plastic zip tie stuff just doesn't hack it on a nice new core like this!

If you don't wanna touch the new radiator, you can do a pusher fan style and mount between your intercooler and radiator. If not custom brackets to keep it a pulled fan, or pusher fan/puller fan for the intercooler. How's the room between your new radiator and waterpump pulley? Clearance issues? Haven't even tried installing it I'll bet.

It's already been in the truck twice. No clearance issues, tons of room. This ain't my first rodeo Honda Boy  .

The hole it goes into, never an issue.

Here's the Engine Side

From the Side, actually only 3 1/2 inches thick.

and here's how i decided to attache the electric fan...

I added Bolts to the Radiator on the top and bottom tanks to attach the Electric Fan very securely.

Good thinking. I was looking at the pics and was thinking the ratiator was going to stick out into the engine compartment. First thought ofcourse. My radiator fan is a fal out of my extra parts left over from my Honda. Lol.

I yould guess that you only use the fan at the start and end of your run. I know on NASCARs if you run the fan it will over heat the engine because it can't pull enough air through it to keep up with the ram air flow. Do you have this problem?

I only use the fan on the Dyno and during tuning etc. in the pits and after warm up on the Starting Line.
It held the temp perfectly with the old radiator at the thermostat opening temp. This year I had the issues with overheating on the three mile course at Bonneville.
This is the first year running 20~25Lbs of boost, so I'm sure this new core will help. Having the Intercooler in front I'm sure doesn't help things, IAT was about 104 degrees also, but the stock single core obviously doesn't hack it.

Just one more thing to be aware of when you start building power.

Knowledge is power. I think it would be cheaper as a group buy.
