DIY Headers

DIY Headers

Postby JimInRadfordVA » Sat Sep 19, 2009 11:36 am

I could really use a good set of paired port headers for my '86 2.0. From what I remember, these are the Holy Grail of Mitsu/D50 parts. The ones that used to be made were tough to find and half of them were crap. I also read here where a member got a set from Australia and they didn't fit.

I'm on a mission to find stuff to make my own. I have a cheap MIG welder. It seems that tubing is readilly available, but the flanges are going to be problematic. My guess is that I could cut a set from 3/8" mild steel plate, using a gasket set as a template. I could do this with a drill press, an angle grinder, some files and 6 hours of my life. Alternately, I could get someone to do it with a plasma cutter.

Any takers?

Jim, I was the one that got the header from Oz and it didnt work. If I could find a guy that had the ability to rework it to make it work. I'd see if I could get em reproduced.

Vannoy thinks the header is set up for a narrowblock, I think its even to big for a narrow block.

What, exactly, was the fitment problem? Do you have pics of the attempted install? Anything you have would be a help.

Got the exhaust manifold gasket. I'l going to order a piece of 3/8" plate to make the flange. Should resist warping and leaking. Tried to source it locally, but no luck so far. I'll post pics as I start fabrication.
