4g63t thread

Postby Johnboy72 » Fri Sep 04, 2009 4:31 am

Let me make a dedicated thread for my lazy ass.

I have a JDM Cyclone 4g63 engine. Now have a couple of questions. Pulled the intake and noticed someone removed the butterflies. I've been told I could just remove the cyclone shit and run a sheetmetal intake. If I do that, is it safe to say I need to trash the cyclone ecu and look for an american ecu and wiring? Someone mentioned an aftermarket tuner. I want something simple where I'm not wasting months trying to get it running right.
Also, can the guys that performed the 4g63 swap post up some pics of their engine bays? I believe I'll move up the engine 3" as I don't want to lose my A/C and cut the firewall.
Opinions on ordering adapter plate and using GM auto trans. I'd like to one day build some serious HP but don't want to buy new trans after every run/weekend.

I found that jay racing makes front thermostat housing for our motors. The ecu may still be usable although I am not too familure with the cyclone version. My manifold was modified by cutting off a section of the manifold and having it welded to the opposite side so it exits on the right side. Clears everything but replacing starters is going to be troublesome because I am still using the intake manifold brace. I hot pics on my photobucket and try to post but might take me a
while cause I'm at work.

How's this?

As far as the ECU goes.... I know that DSM guys don't use JDM ECU's, though I am not sure of why. I would guess that it has extra crap for the cyclone manifold nonsense. If I were you, I would swap a modified 1G or EVO intake manifold on there and get a 1G (manual trans) EPROM ECU. Then in the future you can easily swap to DSMLINK (ECMLINK) when you are more familiar with the 4G63 engines and such. You also won't need to reinvent the wheel with your JDM stuff. I am sure you could sell that stuff on eBay and come close to breaking even for the US spec stuff. 1G intake manifolds are given away on DSM forums, but EPROM ECU's aren't. I would guess that the JDM wiring harness would come close to working with a US ECU if the 3 yellow connectors plug in and you are clever. If not, I happen to have a wiring harness exchange program that may peak your interest ;) I am also in the process of designing some motor mounts that move the engine forward a few inches. My first design works great, as long as you don't have a starter on your engine. :) Oops! Round two will be done this weekend most likely, and should be a lot better than round 1.
Good luck on the swap, and thank YOU for your service.

What about that water neck on the rear? I was thinking of cutting that and turning it at 90 degrees. That and swapping TB to front. Will I still need to move it a full 3" forward? I'm gonna hopefully get to drop motor in next weekend just to see what I'm working with.

1st generation 1.8 eclipse na. I ordered mine from the dealer for like 70. Told them 1990. It corrects the angle to point at a 90 already. Only thing is that it eliminates the fan switch.

Exactly, and if you hit up the local junkyards, these 1.8L thermostat housings can be had for $5 ish. I really really recommend moving the engine forward. I think it makes a way cleaner swap when all is said and done.

Heading up to cash n carry to recon another engine for a Celica we're trying to flip. I'm gonna keep my eye out for that Tstat housing and a rightside motor mount. Is the 2.4 RS motor mount the same as a 2.6?

Ok got the Tstat housing and see what y'all were saying about that sensor. Guess we'll cross that road in the future.

Saw one Ram50 but it was a 2.4 truck I believe. Motor mount looks similar but didn't want to pull unless 100% certain. After this Celica motor ordeal, I'm learly on pulling shit I don't need or won't work.

Im using the old coil resistor to turn on my fan for now. Im too broke and trying to get mines to run right at idle to be concerned about picking up a thermal switch. If anything I can tee a coolant line and add the oem switch later. Fan on when the key is on. Moving the engine forward is a much cleaner method as Jeremy said. I have no access to a welder or the fabricator knowledge to do any needed modification.
