I found a low-mileage 5spd manual, 4x4 tranny, but it's for an 86. Mines an 87. Is there any reason it wouldn't work on my truck? Not familiar enough with the generation change in the driveline to know what the differences would be, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

it should just bolt right up....driveshafts were the same as well as the bell housings and such.

As far as haulin concrete, I plan to avoid any more of that! i don't really enjoy replacing expensive and labor intensive components too frequently. it looked like there were some anatomical differences between the generations-different clutches, etc...Guess i'll take a chance and drop 300 on a used trans.

How much concrete are we talking about? I use mine to haul all kinds of stuff, so I'd like to know the limits. Usually I don't have more than 500lbs, but I had 1,100 in scrap metal once. The truck still sat level, so I wasn't too worried at the time, but now I'm rethinking that.

I had close to 4000 pounds! total weight of truck and load was 6500. I could definitely tell there was a load on it, but the 2.6 hauled it without a whimper. Of course, I'm now wondering if that contributed to the tranny failure. That plus 23 years of use. It will easily match the capacity of the Toyota 1 ton I used to have.

Wow, I guess I'm safe then! I know mine handled 1,100 just fine. Didn't even have to downshift for one of the steep hills to maintain 45mph. I couldn't imagine the look on the scale operators face if I came across with 4,000, he couldn't even believe what I had on mine.

Yeah, these trucks are tough, as long as they aren't abused too badly. Having owned Toyotas, Isuzus and Nissans, I'll stick with my D50.

Just got incredibly lucky. Found an 87 D50 with the 2.6 and 5spd manual 30 miles from me for $300! Owner says it stripped teeth on the timing gears, so I may also have a good core G54B. The transmission is good, so I can get my a$$ back on the road soon.
