I am his son.

I found a auto trany for good price and am in the process of installing it(got it today). We think that the oil pump went out and we could not find any replacement for it.

OK - found another automatic transmission - installed it and everything works! It seems to shift at too high of speed - 1->2 at about 25mph, 2->3 at 47, and 3->OD at 60+. Is this what is to be expected? What can be done to lower the RPMs at which the transmission shifts?

kickdown is either misadjusted or the kickdown on the valve body is bad - it thinks you are at half throttle or better. It should have a small amount of slack when the linkage is at idle.
