I am buying a factory guage cluster with a tach from a guy on here. Not sure about an aftermarket.

most aftermarket tachs have a switch on the back to switch from 4cyl 6cyl v8 etc. Most you just run a signal wire to the positive side of your ignition coil, then a ground, and a power wire. I had a 3in sunpro tach in my truck for a while that I got from Autozone for about $30. It worked pretty good. Or you could always do a stock tach cluster.

oh badass lethal. thanks. ill swing by there and pick one up sometime soon. but that brought up another question about ur 4cyl 6cyl 8cyl thing. not all 4 cyl rev the same........so how does that work? something with the ignition coil or what?

im not quite understanding what your asking. The ignition coil tells the tach what to read, the tach picks up the electrical pulses through the ignition points as they open and close to fire the sparkplugs via the coil

what i was asking was this. does the ignition coil tell the tach the correct rpm? like for example if i put it on an eclipse with a 4cyl will it read differently than a ram 4cyl since they redline at different rpms...? maybe its a goofy question. but hey ya know, this is how we learn.
