Cylinder Wall

I have an 86 Ram 50 with a 2.0L SOHC, I'm replacing the rings and shaft bearings and while honing the cylinder walls I noticed a scratch at the top portion of the #1 cylinder wall about an inch long. I cannot feel it with my fingertip, yet If I run my fingernail across it, I feel it.

Is this something to be concerned with? What can be done about it?

If its not deep the honing should take care of it.It was probably caused by one if the piston rings.

If the honing doesnt take it out after a few passes then Id bore it and get new pistons.

I second that - if the honing can't get it out the boring will.

That's nothing, just make sure the piston ring split is in a different area on the wall and you should be fine.

How much taper is in the cylinder?

The cylinders have been bored once so I don't think there is much if any taper. I'm having this checked out though.

how many miles were on the cylinders? Taper is always worse at the bottom. But there is also a limit on how much you may have to spend, and I have no idea what your limit is. If it's cheep then slap her on the ass and send it on it's way. But a second look from a machine shop won't hurt. If there half way decent they won't charge you and give you there honest opinion.

The cylinders are OK. I should have the Ram 50 back on the road by next weekend. I also had the Manual transmission checked over and it passed inspection, just getting the seals replaced. I took the exhaust Manifold apart though and it looks like there is a catalytic converter in the Manifold then immediately after that, there is another converter. Why did they do that?

good, so now it's build time. We want pictures and How 2's for the other guys. Be sure to include all the dumb things you come across, and the work around. Lord knows there is a ton of them on these trucks.

well the cat is in the manifold, That is done to keep it as hot as possible. Then there is a resonator. A small 2 X 4 X 5 inch thing.

the 2 cats were for a 2 stage emissions systems - the first one is a quick light off cat to start working quickly , the second one is for after the motor warms up. Nowadays, you only need the 2nd cat to meet emissions, so the first one could be pulled from the manifold, and they wouldn't be the wiser. BTW, that cat is the old style cats that bring good money at the scrap yard - don't just toss it.

3536 It's been slow going, but I eliminated the Balance shafts and currently in the process of putting things together. the Transmission was overhauled and is in place. slowly and surely it's coming together.

3598 There it is. We got it installed Sunday before labor day and it seems to do well. Another Ram 50 survives the scrap yard.
