Hey Kids.. I thought that I had a fairly nice 87 quest for a good price and waited too long and now he doesn't want to sell..:(

BUT, another guy that I met at a pull it had a quest with a 5.0 in it and was looking for more quest steering boxes (his it riding RIGHT on the header- cooking it)
Got to yakkin and the engine and trans just happens to be a auto trans to the 2.6 (just what's in my 86... get where I'm going...)

Anyone know what can be done to the quest tranny's like the baby 904's? (It's the wide block isn't it?)
My 86 is already an auto but it's the narrow auto. I wonder what it would take to swap and be reliable?
OH, and he's still got the harness and ECU supposedly..

Might look at it this weekend.

Thanks E

The conquest auto tranny is a 4 spd o/d, where the 86 is a 3 spd. Force 10 transmission has a shift kit if its an ansin auto - its the same tranny as a nissan 300zx. You will need to shorten the front driveshaft and swap the speedo gear if your rear axle ratio is not 3.55, and change the shifter to the conquest one to turn on and off the o/d. Then you need to either add the temp sensor into the intake manifold, or ground the wire from the tranny to get the o/d to work. There are adaptors available to go from narrow to wide bolt pattern trannies - look on the hotrodcoffeeshop site for where to get them.

I won't complain if you jack with some pics of your quest engined max..

Hey Penneyman.
Does this look like one?
I picked it up a couple of years ago in a 87 max rwd.

I'd really like to know if all I have to do to get a overdrive is to just install a toggle switch to lock the converter..

If anyone would like to chime in I could put this in the 86 (maybe)
Maybe I should start another thread.

That is the o/d 4 spd auto - you can use a toggle switch to engage the o/d - just be sure to ground the wire fron the tranny that would go to the temp sensor for it to engage. Is that a narrow block or wide block tranny - they came in both in 87? BTW - that has a screen for the filter inside the tranny - just take it out and clean it - its reusable. My Dad had the same tranny in an 88 ram 50 and he couldn't kill the tranny, even after he tried to drown the truck twice driving it through water up over the hood. That truck had 160k when I sold it and it still ran strong.

I'll try and get pics of the wiring/color coding/linkage and post it up with pics of lower bolt measurements.

BOY, if it's the narrow, I could swap it in my 86.. (Can I?) I mean if all I have to do is shorten the drive shaft and I think I still have the crossmember..
SO, engaging the "OD" is just locking the converter right? When I installed a 200r4 in my 72 Monte, I had a vacuum switch that did that.
Thanks again

Yes the torque converter should mount to the 86 flexplate. The shifter from the 86 should also work if you don't have the conquest shifter - a montero auto shifter would also work with the neutral safety switch. You just need a toggle switch to activate the o/d.

Looks like a wide block trans.. There are 4 wires coming from the other side of the trans. Like a selector of some sort. (NOT the shifter, a selector on the pass side in the pic. And the other (D/S) has a one wired solenoid Is that the one to hook to a toggle?

Did Mitsu use this same one in the quest/starion?
Thanks E

That single wire is the one to ground to get o/d to work. The others I am not sure of without a manual - it may be the reverse light switch and the pulse generator for the cruise control.

Good info, but it does not apply to the Aisin-warner tranny. I have seen people state in this forum and on others that they have an A-500 mopar tranny in their truck, but I highly doubt it, as these trucks were built for Chrysler by mitsubishi and it would have required mopar to make a special tranny for them. Even the baby 904 in your 86 was not built by mopar, the design was theirs but was built by someone else, probably aisin.
