Swapping out the a/c clutch

On my 95' MM my a/c clutch is dead. I found another and will be swapping it out. What's involved, do I need a puller? What about shims, how to? I'm leaving the compressor on the truck as it's still charged. It's the Mitsubishi msc90c model compressor. Wish me luck. thanks

You may need a puller. There is a special one that can be used. But many times after pulling the nut in the center you can use 2 screw drivers on ether side and very carefully work the clutch off. WD40 on the shaft may help. All you are replacing in the clutch coil correct? If so then reuse the shims that are on the shaft. Total time 45 minutes.

Also my book only goes up to the year 1993, anyone have the a/c heater wiring diagrams for the 1995. Looks like some wiring (colors) etc. are different

Did you look in the manual section under 216 manuals? There is a Haynes that I think covers your truck.

I got the clutch today and took a picture. It looks great. The company is on ebay selling under Jensen Auto out of Michigan. You can get there rebuilt compressor for $200 or the clutch for $75 if anyone is interested3787.

Installed the clutch today and the air works like a champ. But I do need to shim the plate out some as it scraps after it heats up. Does anyone know what to shim it out to, also when I removed mine it only had 1 shim, anyone know where I can purchase some shims. Also I hot wired the clutch to the battery as the terminal at the clutch still isn't seeing 12v....still more work ahead. thanks again. Eric

You could be low on freon which is telling the sensor/switch there isn't enough pressure in the system so its not sending power to the compressor.

A wiser man than I once explained to me the importance of breaking in a new a/c clutch. Just like seating in new break pads or a new trans clutch. I dont know many people who do it but it doesnt take very long just to engage then disengage the clutch 10-20 times to let it seat in properly. Just a thought anyhow

The clutch air gap should be 0.015 -0.024 measured with a feeler gauge

Id call around to your local parts stores and see if they have some shims. If not call back where you got the clutch from and get them to send you some .....they should hook you up with that for good customer service. I dont know the exact dimensions of the shims but you might also get lucky using a plain old washer if you can find one close enough to the right size. Around here there are a few A/c specialists shops that make lines and retro fit kits. Id bet if you had one local to you that they would have a drawer full of spare parts like that.

Have you tried jumping the a/c coolant temp sensor connector yet? Connect the gray wire to the black/yellow and see if the clutch engages.
The coolant temp sensor for the computer is yellow/green and a black wire ( dont jump this one)

Okay here's the skinny on the a/c. Today I shimmed the clutch out to .027 (that's the shim I found). Hooked up the hose with a/c on and idling....gauges read 190 high side and 27 low side. Now as I ran the idle up to around 2500, the high side when to 195 and the low went down to 9. Add some freon and call you in the morning.
