Fill it with water. Turn on the heater full hot, then start and idle. Add more water while running. Feel the water line at the head and you can tell when the T stat opens. I like to drill a small 1/8" hole in the flange of the Thermostat to allow air to escape when filling them.

are you plugging the hole once you drill it?

It's in the thermostat flange, Like this. Nothing to plug. It just allows a small amount of water to circulate and remove air.

No. The only time you would need to burp a system other then by just adding water is if for some reason there is a place that air cab become trapped in a high spot.

The original stats came with a hole with a small sinker in it to allow the air to come out of the system. The stant replacements also were made that way.

You could go to an orilleys and get a special tool to create a vacume in your cooling system that will suck up the coolant back into the motor.
