bolt pattern is the same....but I believe the hole in the center of the wheel is slightly bigger on the montero

Offset needed to tuck it going to depend on width of the rim. As the width goes up so does the offset in order to tuck. 7.5" wide +25-28 at the very least, usually +31. 8" atleast +40

So basically a 17x8 would be positive offset 40 in order not to stick out pass the fender?offset just depends on width not hight of the rim?

If you want it just flush with the bedside you can probably get away with +25-30 or so but if you want it to tuck(clear the inner bedsides) then +40. Yes offset is only affectes by width

Original rims were 4.5" backspacing on a 6" rim. If you go to a wider rim, the same backspacing will work with no suspension issues with a stock setup (no drop spindles or drop coils, flipped ball joints, etc). When a dimension is given like +30 or +40 - that measurement is from the center of the wheel. A +40 rim that is 8" wide would have a backspacing of about 5.5". backspacing is always measured from a straightedge laid across the back of the rim to the back of the center of the rim mounting surface. Too much backspacing will cause clearance issues with suspension parts, or cause the tire to contact the inner fenderwells or strut rods.
