Rear Differential Ratio

I was wondering if yall would know what my rear diff. ratio would be in my old truck? I wanna try to avoid takin the cover off and having to seal it back up.

hey, clean off the back of the housing, there should be a tag with a code and the ratio.
either 3.91 or 3.54.

Most are 3.909. Autos/ext cab/long bed got 3.545 and 4x4the are either 3.909 or 4.22

If you look in the manual section> factory manual> there is a vin decode in there.

All 1980 and 1979 d-50/arrow pickups were 3.909 or 3.91 ratio - 3.55s were not available until 1983.

Ranger or Toyota axle swap.......the 7.5" and 8.8" first gen Rangers came with at 3.45/3.55, 3.73 and 4.11's but you can swap in a set of gears from any car with the same axle and get 2.55,2.73,3.08 or 3.23 gears. Then you have the 5 lug conversion and you can do the Toyota front hub swap for the 5 lug in front.

The Toyota came with a 3.90, 4.11, 4.88 and 5.26 again the gears can be swapped for a lower gear set from a Supra, Cressida or Celica till they went FWD.

Now these are not a "direct" swap but with a little fab work they will fit no problem.

the nice thing about doing it this way is you can do everything on the axle sitting on a bench and hot have to work under the truck till the final bolt up to the leaf springs.

My '83 FSM says my 4x4 2.3TD has 4.10 gears.

Whawhawhat? Swap in Toyota hubs and rear axle, you say? That would make some things a lot easier (especially for me, with 3 1/2 Toyotas sitting around). The rear seems easy, but what does the front involve? Can it be done with the 6-lug 4x4 hubs?

I have an automatic with no overdrive and want my reduce highway rpm. What gear swap would you guys recommend?

Do we have the 8.25 Chrysler rear end?
I'm going with a 3:55.

No, we have an 8" Mitsubishi rear. They do have 3.55 gears for it in the later auto trucks. The rear gears from a 3000 GT AWD or stealth r/t AWD may work if you could find them - they are available in 3.27 and 3.08 I think. Or find an A body mopar large bolt pattern - gives you 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern and a choice of many gear ratios

now that you have the gears, pick up a power brute LSD and you will be set. BTW, the gear change in the rear will throw the speedo off unless you change the speedo gear in the tailshaft.
