1st and 2nd gen Transmission compatability

Found an 89 Ram 50 4x4 for sale and they say it needs a transmission. I am assuming manual because they mentioned a new clutch cable.

I have the trans out of a first gen (84?) diesel 4x4. Would it be the same? Will it fit?

I think there the same parts inside. Just a different output shaft and no tail housing. Ask Mopar JA. he is going through a 4X4 trans now. One thing he will tell you is to pay attention to the détent balls. If you use the wrong one it will have a shifting problem.

hey, doesn't the 84 diesel have a hydraulic clutch?
a lot of the internals interchange, so it could be a use one to fix the other job.
also be sure to replace the input bearing, as they are known to get noisey.

Not sure if the 84 would be hyd clutch or not, it is in a snowbank now. I have the whole remainder of the truck anyway if I need to steel parts, as the 4d55 was swapped into my 85 (previously a gas, has a manual clutch.)

I would likely change the clutch and bearing while it was apart.

Camoit, would the output and tailhousing be different? note both are 4x4

As far as I know the 4X4 and the 5 speed klm (or what ever the letters are, it escapes me at the moment) there are all the same parts inside. Mopar JA took my old 5 speed and used it on his 4X4. One thing he says to keep an eye on is the detent balls. There is one that is just slightly larger and if you stick it in the wrong hole it won't shift. Shoot him a PM and ask him for low down on the parts interchange. He told me that only the tail shaft was different. from my first gen to his second gen 4X4. He was going to do a total work up on the thing, but that was before he had surgery.
We have only seen one odd ball trans on here. On the second picture, do you see the holes that are "not" knocked out of the casing? The trany in question had 2 shift forks through those holes. We think it came out of a mini van, Aries K car, Colt, or a fork lift. But it was the only trany we have seen that used them holes and external shift linkage. It's on here somewhere. But all the parts were the same. It was about a year ago.

I had seen that thread about the oddball trans, I would think that some sort of industrial application (forklift) would be likely.

I am still up in the air about whether to tackle this or not. I really dont need another project, but if I can get it cheap and find time to do it with basically little cost (because I have the donor parts), it could be worth it to drive for awhile, or just make some cash.

Does anyone have a breakdown of transmission model numbers and years/engines?
