View Full Version : Natedog's 6g72 Turbo Swap

Well I'm going to share this a little early, I don't know when I'll be able to finish it, but I try to work on it a little (or drink beer and look at it) daily.

Basically Started with this....

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/167808_1725903118272_6393900_n.jpg

Bought this...
http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/555053_3496466581252_1972422294_n.jpg

Now working on combining the two. First issue was that the block on the DOHC had a raised portion that kept the passenger side mount from bolting down. I simply notched it out of the way.

Used Montero 3.5 water pump and pipes, custom fab on the one on the back of the heads. Note the CAS will interfere with the firewall where it is. I'd recommend doing this swap with a 93+ engine if I had to start it over again... but I have a plan.

3.8 Galant upper intake.
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/578940_4775213829134_641063646_n.jpg

Mated to the transmission.
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/382046_4846116241650_104955954_n.jpg

Sitting in the truck...
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/559027_4869920076731_1267731204_n.jpg

I'm currently sorting out using the 3000gt power steering and AC compressor. I'm also looking at a single turbo instead of the twins, purely for easier fab. I'm trying to keep the power level near stock, I'm not sure how strong the stock transmission is...

badass build man.. keep us posted. and that motor looks good in that engine bay! keep it up

Natedog

I sourced a stock Evo 8 intercooler for the swap, I've been working on spinning the AC core around in it's brackets to output the AC lines into the bay. This will give me room for the intercooler, and I'll move the canister to the firewall, and make shorter lines all around while at it... I'll update when I actually do something on it!

How much room is there to keep the turbos on the sides of the engine? That pic with the turbo, looks like it won't be too happy exiting to the fender(exhaust). Had that same intercooler on my truck. Had to cut the pipes off the endtanks a little short for it to fit the way I wanted it.

Natedog
02-02-2014, 05:28 AM
The problem with mounting the turbo's on the sides is space and orientation. Space could be achieved by cutting the the fender on the passenger side, but on the driver side it would get into the brake master cylinder. Also, in stock orientation the intake for the turbo's will point toward the firewall. If you change sides with them the intake would be rights, but then the stock o2 housings wont fit due to the mighty max engine mounts. Also in that forward configuration the turbo intake would interfere with the accessories.

I'm not saying it can't be done. Old Colt over on the 6g72rwd forum has a montero he has been slowly working on, he's going to use the stock turbo's. However the Montero has different spaces in the engine bay. He machined an adapter to flip the manifold over on one side.

For myself I felt it would be easier to use one turbo. My fab guy has thanked me.

This is going to be so badass, love the build. Keep the pics coming.

4doorciv

What about flipping the turbos? Making them top mounted? Maybe ony cuting the fenders above the tire wells would be required. Just a thought. And maybe speed density/blow through maf makes intake routing easier? Made mine a lot easier. Lol.

Natedog
02-03-2014, 02:27 PM
The driver side one would be top mount using the stock manifolds, if you flip sides it puts the driver side turbo into the accessories. Again, just because I'm doing it this way doesn't mean it won't work the other, but I couldn't figure out a good way. I opted for less piping, not having to run the intakes of the turbo's together, or the compressor outlets together before the inter cooler.

I definitely require more updates on this. What are you doing for motor mounts/transmission mounting?
Coming from the 3000GT community, I HAVE to ask...
You still got that parts car? :)

The engine mounts and trans are the stock v6 truck parts. I am modifying the pasenger site frame mount to clear the AC. My fab guy is almost done with the turbo set up. I will get some more pictures soon.

Parts car is long gone.

I'm guessing clearance issue with firewall.

Natedog
05-03-2014, 12:46 PM
Yup, I mentioned it way back in my first post. If the engine were newer it would have the crank and cam sensor's but since its the first generation engine it has the CAS on the cam shaft. Little re-engineering should fix it on my part (hopefully). If I were to do it over I'd have went with the later model engine. Too late now!

I had a custom exhaust pipe come out and go over the frame rail and exit straight down, in front of the right rear tire. Hassled too much times by the local inspectors every year. Smart move on the "stock appearing" from the get go.

There is lots of little things left to do, get all the AC plumbed / replaced. Adapt multiple lines for coolant, oil, etc. I've still got to get the fuel system swapped over to the car pump, and mod the lines to the fuel rail. As well as the heater hoses, which I plan to pull the heater core and modify it for how I want things. Did I mention, I haven't even started wiring...

Wow, Nate things are rolling great. The tolerances between parts on your build are so tight looking in them photos. I am wondering whats going to rattle together when you lite that truck up the first time. That G72 looks so nice in that bay also. Perfect build for that truck. Nice to see you progressing along and keeping us all posted with this. Very impressive work...:) You can no longer go to the Autoparts store for those particular parts since you damn well made everything custom.

You sure you want to give up on this man? You got all of the really hard stuff done, and you did it expertly. Now it's just the dozen tiny things. Don't quit on this.

I must be loosing my mind, because i cant find the edit post function. Here are a bunch of random pictures. I doubt anyone will want to pay what I'll have to have for it (even at half the cost im into it), but figured I'd share.

The edit button is a donator perk. We had problems in the past with abuse.
Everyone that is into these trucks becomes one at some point in there life.
At that point your stuck hopelessly in the funnel.

Nobody gets into this game to make a profit out of building a project vehicle - it's about the process. The numbers on building a modded ride goes something like this - buy the truck etc, work out how much it's 'going' to cost, then double it. That should put you in the ball park for an overall budget :shakehead: Sometimes you get the ultimate budget find and it saves you a heap of cash but it doesn't happen often enough... hopefully someone sees the potential in your work and takes it on from where you've had to leave it.

Are you married? My wife understands that when I say I love my truck, It's like saying I love my dog. :dog:

Hang in there!

Dang Nate. You have really put a dent in this. Looks like most of its done and you have some electrical to do. Why not finish? BTW I need to thank your for confirming that the DOHC will fit with the brake master cylinder. I will be doing a similar build, but with some variations. Also nice work on the CAS, as there is no way to mount that against the firewall. I probably would have sourced some 2nd gen heads with all that work. LOL.

PS I just picked up a Montero SR, so I think you know where I am headed with that.

Thanks guys, I'm just tired of not having the time to work on it. I have many other projects and this one is lowest on the list right now. If no one makes a decent offer it can sit here. I just hate to see it take up room in my shop for the next year or so till I can actually do something with it.

Nate it took me 12 years to put mine back together. I built or restored 9 other vehicles in that time for customers but for the last 3 years I've been driving the wheels off mine. Just put it off to the side and when you have an hour or 2 do something with it and you'll get it done.

If all that is holding you back is time then put it aside and it will wait for you. A little bite out of it here and there and it will come together. But if someone comes along and makes a good offer, well it might be time to plan the next project. :)

Just wanted to let you guys know that this thing sold, and was finished. It now resides in Illinois, and spends its days as a Daily driver for the Twins at AMS performance. Maybe they will chime in with an update.

...?? maybe it's just me, but can't see ANY PICS for some reason..

Sorry that it ended up that way. All too familiar for me also. Sold my '66 New Yorker 2dr to a guy and BAM.. He did all this stuff to it within a couple months. And that BMW vert was sold to another bud and he's got a tunnel-ram'd 350/th350 with 3.91 LSD rear!

Seems like my projects don't get done by me, just the peeps I sell to..

I think the vast majority of the pics were re-sourced from failbook. Might need a FB account or something...
