No heat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an 87 mighty max 2.6 4x4 and I just can't get the heat to work on it. I've talked to my mechanic and he says its the blend door. Well i don't have the money to pay someone to fix it so is there a way i can open the blend door so I have heat again? Pics and or diagrams would be really appreciated.

If you look for the cables that run from the controls to the heater box you should see where they go. Then move the levers on the controls. You should see the cables moving. If not it's a broken cable. You can move the doors manually. Look for a small round rod / lever that comes out of the heater box on the passenger side near there feet. Also the heater valve may not be working.

I've looked and all I see is where the lever goes to a plunger that allows the hot coolant into the core. I cannot see another cable going to the blend door.

Does the core get hot? It might even be a plastic lever on your model. If you look in the manual section under 216 manuals. you will find the .PDF manual to your truck. It's listed as a Haynes manual for the Montero and Mighty Max trucks. There might be a picture in there that can help you.

There should be a small round hole on the blend door where you can re-atatch the cable that will allow you to obtain heat again:thumbup:

Ive looked at the manual and ive manually moved the blend door. It looks like ive got to pull the dash out and the heater assembly outh later on today.
It really sucks not having any heat in the middle of winter here in NC

You don't have to pull the dash out. Just remove the glove box door, and you have all the access you need.

Those trucks are so simple in how they are engineered it's almost comical. I don't feel your blend door is even close to being the problem. Has someone blocked off the heater core to hide a coolant leak at the core?

Can't remember who it was earlier in the thread,, but I thing he was on the right track. Feel the heater core after the motor is fully warmed up. If it is cold, I'll bet it has been blocked off.

Hell 2 hoses, 2 bolts, and unhook the cables and the whole heater box comes out from under the dash. Then you can see if there is a problem with the heater core.

If your 87 is like my 89 4x4 you have to remove the dash to get the heater box out. You can r&r the thing in a few hours in warmer temps. If you have a place to do it inside a heated building that would be great.

FYI Bunnys Garage in Sandy Ridge N.C. had a few Ram 50's when I was there a few years ago. You might be able to get heater box parts there.

My heater issue turned out to be nothing more than 30 years of crap built up in the fins of the heatercore. Took it out, blew some compressed air through it a bunch of times, reinstalled, and hey presto! Except I didn't restore the weatherstripping around it, so there's cold air bypassing it and making the end result lukewarm. That's further down the Todo list...
