So my fsm for my truck says to use the nipple 1/4" under the top of the head to line up my timing mark for my cam gear. But if i do that my distributor cant line up to #1. Do i use the top of the head instead? See pics46634664

It looks like you would be better off using the head

Ok lines up with the head. Got it. I have it all lined up to the small mark right now and it's a tooth off when I use the head. I'll re-time it tomorrow. My biggest issue now is I hope the oil pump gasket works. I bought this one and the lower bolt hole was off a bit causing it to need to be modified. I hope the rest of the gasket lines up. The oil filter housing gasket was totally wrong.

It's listed for 4g63 but it matches the gasket for the 4g64. The only way to get the gasket is to buy a new oil pump and I wasnt looking to spend $200 since I'll be selling the truck after my D50 project is done. I compared this one to the pic of the gasket kit that comes with the oil pump. The holes are a little different but seem to be in the same spot.

46754676Thats the best im gona be able to do, i Can go over or under the head. It seems ur mark is half a tooth different. Neither way helps my distributor. if i line up the pulley with the cam dowel at 12 oclock i can perfectly line up the distributor with #1 in the middle of the stud. Ignore the first pic

half tooth is ok. I'm guessing you just rebuilt. If you had the machine shop deck the block and head then you should have used the thick head gasket and it would have been on the money. But it's ok and will run just fine.

I ended up setting it to where the book says with the ear on the front of the head. I found pics on auto store websites of a long block and their marks are set by the book. I didn't do any machine work on the head since I'm not keeping the truck once my D50 is done. Save that money on machine work for my diesel. The head will definately have to be checked on it.
