Anyone got any leads on where to find used 4D55s? I see 4D56 pop up on eBay every now and then. I know there's a MM boneyard in NC that might have a diesel motor available but I don't know if he'd ship. I'm in the Bay Area. I've been looking through local Pick And Pulls and gassers show up, never seen a diesel.

Also, how much should I look to spend on a used non-built 4D55? How much would a rebuild cost?

Any reason you don't want a 4D56?

None really. I don't want the newer 4D56 that requires and ECU, prefer to keep it simple and all mechanical.

Most 4d56 don't require an ECU. Mine is from a 2010 and doesn't use one.

Really? I thought the new CDRI was all electrical. Is your Montero swapped?

It's not in a Montero, I installed it into my Mazda B2600. It was a brand new 2010 crate engine.

The 4d56 is the same engine just different internals with a stronger roller rocker head. I've heard the 4d56 head can be put on the 4d55. The 4d56 can be adapted to the older 4d55 injection system. The best way to find one is keep an eye on the junkyards and local classifieds. I was lucky to find an 84 D50 royal with a turbo diesel 4d55T but it's in rough shape since it was a retired hunting truck. It also has a blown H/G. Theyre just uncommon and the TDs are even more uncommon. They only made em in the US for 3 years, 83-85. Some 83s were non turbo.

I'm looking at spending 750 in parts for my truck ontop of 500 or so of machine work to deck, clean and re-sleeve (to do it properly) and disassembly, reassembly and R&I myself. Also mine has a blown H/G and potentially a damaged head. Those prices are without a new head. Theyre not cheap and tend to warp when these run hot which is common also unless you prepare them to run cooler. Like I said before theyre just not common, mitsu doesn't make parts anymore and just hard to find anything for. Are they worth it? Most definately. I'm building a MPG whore with mine.

Actually they were in the Ford Rangers up through 1987. Mitsubishi does still make parts and brand new engines.

My mitsu guys told me I couldnt get much for them. :( That was when I was working for them. A brand new 4d55 in the box would be nice but I'd rather not when I see the price. Something that old mitsu may not have them anymore in the warehouse.

They just don't know where to look. You can't get the new 4D55's but you can get new 4D56's. They are a direct replacement for the 55's.

Looks nice but $4000 is a little steep for me.

Is there a shop somewhere close to the Bay Area that can rebuild these engines?

Whoa. Just discovered the Archive. This helps a lot.

What happened to the site in March 2011?

Here's what sounds like a near basket case or very expensive rebuild. It's in Moscow, Idaho. Not mine, no affiliation, just wanted to throw it out there. http://pullman.craigslist.org/cto/4543530146.html

I posted that in the Craigslist thread a while ago. I thought someone on this board bought it but I guess not. Nice find for $600.
