Balance shaft delete

Has anybody done this, or can it be done? I need to change the timing belt on my 86 2.0 Is there any advantage to deleting the balance shaft belt, I see kits for it on e-bay, A friend said he did the bal.shaft delete on his 2.6, he claimed more power, but of course they have a chain.

Yes there are delete kits for the belt style as well. You can find them at rockauto.com as well. All 4 cylinder in-line engines naturally have vibrations. The counter shaft is a weighted shaft that is only there to make you not feel the vibrations that are produced. (it's not that bad) Removing the extra rotating mass of the shaft will give you more power and a quicker rev up as there is less rotating mass inside the engine.

I have removed the balance shafts from my 86 G63B and it is working fine. I don't have that extra belt to be concerned with.

Thanks for the info, according to the link sent by LSR mike you can just remove the bal. shaft belt & serve the same purpose. Since my main concern is to replace the timing belt (201,000mi, no sure when it was replaced) don't want to trash the eng. This seems like the easiest way to go

Nope, removing the belt will just shut down one shaft, then the engine will try and rip itself out of the bay, you have to remove the shaft which is part of the oil pump drive to stop both from spinning.

Thanks, I think I will just replace both belts and if I decide to rebuild I will do the whole thing at that time.

I did the balance shaft delete kit when I rebuilt my 2.6 4 years ago. The vibrations are very noticeable, and engine is louder. I'm actually going to restore the balance shaft system next month. Some experience members on the site maintain that if you don't have the rotating mass balanced (i didn't) it can cause micro fractures and lead to engine failures. It does rev faster without the balance shafts, but I like how smooth it ran with them installed. At idle you can't tell the engine is running. Your engine is a different, newer design, and may not have the same issues.

Thanks, I think I will have to rebuild this old motor, (not what I wanted to do) but low comp. & uses a lot of oil, changed the valve seals, didn't help, I was thinking about doing the delete, so thanks for the input, since I'm not looking for high end performance, just a good running vechicle, Thanks again
