Hello Everyone, I am from Winston Salem N.C. and have just bought a 1988 MM with the 2.0 liter and 5 speed that only 76,000 miles. I hope to get the truck running again and drive the wheels off of it. The truck has been sitting in a garage for the past 13 years. All the gas was ran out of it before it was parked so I don't know if that will help or hurt. I may have to fined a good person here local that know how to work on these trucks. Anybody know of anyone? I do have it running but it will not take the gas good when going through the gear's, I have to keep patting the pedal to get it to take the gas and it will finally take off and get down the road.

Replace the fuel filter, it is on the drivers side of the tank towards the top. maybe some new plugs/wires and fresh oil. New coolant too

I have done all of those things but it still is not taking the gas right.

Put a weber on it and try not to kill the poor girl, she has been asleep for 13 years. Treat it nice and she may reward you.

I want to add, check fuel pump diaphram, pump is against intake manifold

Your carb probably took a dump, they are not known for being reliable. Best bet is a weber carb.

Yep agree with DroppedMitsu, Could try some Seafoam, might help, never know.

Thank's for all the replies, I put a bottle of sea foam in a fresh tank of gas but that has not help yet. I will check the pump on the today. Where is the best place to buy a Weber carb and what does one cost? I don't want to get one that someone else has buggered with!

With out the air cleaner on it, rev it up by hand. Then while it's at the higher rpm with your other hand hold a rag and stick it over the top of the carb. It will suck fuel from every port in the carb. When it slows down a bit pull the rag off. Clear it up and do it again a couple of times. The passages are full of spiders and varnish. It will come back to life it will just take time and driving.

Thank's camoit, Can you tell me if I have to drop the fuel tank to change the fuel filter?

no it's just hard to find. it's in front of the tank next to the frame rail. use a flashlight and safety glasses. Shit will fall in your eyes. Also make sure to keep the tank from siphoning off when you pull the line. So shop rags and a plain is a must. You pull the feed line and the lift it above the tank to stop the flow. The early first gens it was on the out side of the rail that was nice. But is they were hit by a car they would leek fuel so they moved them into the hard to find place.

Well I could not think about changing the fuel filter and not checking the fuel tank since the truck had been sitting for a while, sure glad I did had a lot of bad gas and seidment in it. I got it cleaned out good and I also found that the vacuum breaker on top was stopped up also I think. The rubber hose that goes to it was eat into by something. Is there anywhere that you know of that I can get a new vacuum breaker or do I even need to put it back in? It looks like a fuel filter that is used on a lawn mower engine but I am sure it is differant.

It is a check valve and you need it. You should be able to blow through one direction only if it is good.
