i have a 1988/1987 ram 50 can you do away with the computer on the firewall if you change out the carb?

If you get rid of the stock carb for a completely mechanical carb like a Weber than yes you can get rid of the stock computer/ecu.

Yup.

Even calling it a 'computer' is kind of a stretch LOL.

I think it is known as OBD .5 or possibly OBD I to to be honest. There is no interface for a scanner. The tech would hook up a "socket box" tester and would count the number of times the red light flashed on the tester to deduce the fault code. Bwahahahaha. :lmao:

I doubt you could find a shop with the right equipment to do any testing to be honest. Maybe in Cali. Anywhere else good luck.

Any shop that would still have one would be covered with an inch of dust.

It's a very primitive system, more of a circuit really. All it does is sample the O2 sensor and send a signal to the carb to adjust trim. The OEM was a feedback carb. So you can get rid of the O2 sensor, too, if you have a Weber.
