Some time ago, someone posted about a place in Florida that replaces components of ECU's that are known to go bad. The post reported that you could remove your ECU and mail it there: the cost was about $150.00. (It is known the capacitors (?) leak after 25-30 years and are filled with whale oil).

Please post here any information on such a company, and if possible the mailing address and contact information. Many thanks for any replies and information.

Also, any other companies known to refurbish the ECU (surely there's more than one). As new ECU's are upwards of $300.00, refurbishing the original seems a wise investment.

With my old '92, I took the board to a local TV & radio repair guy and asked him to do it. I think he did it for $30. FYI...

Thanks, Noah: that's certainly a lead. I have a great computer guy that I can give a call to Monday and see if it's in his feild of vision. Great suggestion, but would still like the other info for posterity.

I have used Foreign Auto Computer Repair in Zephyrhills , FL (813-788-7671) for both of my trucks, very satisfied. A friend with a Mitsu shop has used them for years and referred them to me.

You really should look at this catalog on repair of ECM & ECU's. It's pretty straight forward and gives great info on the Mitsubishi computers.

Took a Montero v6 ecu to a local radio repair shop in Washington state, he deals mostly with Motorola handhelds, refused to repair it. Ended up getting a rebuilt from oreillys for 300. No you-pull would warranty an ecu within 150 miles of my dad's house. Atleast a 2 hour drive to the first one to give a 1 year warranty and no garenteed in stock. Only showed they had a Montero but no listing as to what is removed/available. Not worth the gamble.

Thanks, 4DC - this is exactly the kind of thing I want to avoid. Few on this forum mind saving a hundred dollars or so, and I have no idea what's involved with installing a new one...like: does it need to be programmed?...and I'd just as soon have the original unit.

I'm going to opt first to try my computer guy on Monday. If he's not willing, then I'll call Zephyrhills and "set up an appointment". If the price is good then I'll ship it overnight express.

I'll be sure to let the forum know what the outcomes are. One thing for sure: it's something we'll all face, sooner or later. Mine's not bad, but I AM getting a smell in the cab that is sort of like pepper. I've read that the ECU's start "smelling like fish" when they begin leaking, and this is because of the whale oil used in the capacitors.

They do most ECU for $190 and offer a life time warranty to the original owner. Totaly worth it as i had problems with my repair, I sent it back and they fixed it again at no charge. They are based out of Florida.

Also, if you have a early 3.0 V6 4x4, ninja performance is capable of repair and service of our ECUs and are very trusted in the community.

If you have a fuel injected Mitsu for the early 90s, they will have bad Caps made by Rubicon that leak and cause problems. Also change your AIC (Idel Air Control) stepper motor, As the old ones destroy ECUs... Trust me I have delt with this plenty...
