Paxton SN89 Supercharger for 3.0

Makes me want to get a 3.0 V6 someday. Bonus: These are perfectly smog legal in California on either a truck or Montero.

Anyone ever tried one of these?

Smog legal in california? Now I wonder if it gives the V6 any more horsepower since the laws out there are so suck. Personally I like that supercharger sound also. A nice gear drive can mock a supercharger and actually sound pretty nice too.

Aftermarket parts are legal so long as they don't bypass or disable any emissions equipment and don't push the emissions over the vehicle limits. But the reason why you can't slap any turbo or supercharger on any old car, in California at least, is the turbo kit manufacturer has to pay for Air Resources Board testing and certification. Sort of like some desirable overseas cars not being legal for sale here in the US (even though they could meet all of the standards) because the car manufacturers or import company didn't want to pay DOT to crash test dozens of cars and then have to meet EPA standards.

Since the truck and Montero with this supercharger kit were tested at 15 MPH and 25 MPH, the RPM at those speeds would be at or below 2000. So it's possible the supercharger wasn't at full boost at those speeds, keeping the emissions below the limits. So it's not necessarily true that this supercharger doesn't add significant power.

Apparently Paxton saw a large enough market for Mitsubishi trucks to pay for the testing, hence the certification. Now the trick is finding one, it looks like the SN89 has been out of production for a long time and was superceded by the SN92 and SN2000.

Did some research on superchargers last night and stumbled upon on the Aisin model AMR300 and AMR500 superchargers last night. They're good for up to about 95 HP and 150 HP respectively. These are incredibly compact Roots type blowers not much bigger than an AC compressor built for Japanese microcars and they're inexpensive. Popular with aircooled VW guys. The inlet and outlet flanges look easy to work with and it doesn't look too tough to mount one in place of AC or power steering and then adapt it to work with a Weber carb in a simple draw through setup.

And they sound awesome. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzip...

I don't have any money for this right now but I'm bookmarking all of this stuff...

not nice bogarting the info - let us see this so we can drool over it too...BTW in the 80's there was a company called camden superchargers that made kits to put small roots type blowers on most mini trucks of the time.

There's a guy in Australia who makes all sort of bracketry and adapters for these superchargers, extend-o snouts, underdrive pulleys, etc.

Bonus: Found out that not only the Paxton SN89 but also the much more common SN92 superchargers are CARB legal on Mitsu V6s, both Monty and pickup, from MY1989-92. The SN92 was popular with the foxbody Mustang 5.0 guys. It's a centrifugal type blower, looks absolutely badass.

wish I did - they have been out of business for many years, but saw a setup on ebay about 2 years ago for a datsun. Looks like one from a toyota mr2 or a bmw mini cooper.

Just had an '89 Monty (with EFI!) come into the shop. 281,XXX miles on it, still ran like a champ. What tough trucks. There's so much space in the bay, it looks like a Paxton supercharger wouldn't be too difficult, at least compared to today's jam packed engine bays.

Rahtid, do you have more information on the OEM supercharger? Specs, model, etc.?

the supercharger was on the 2.0 version of the v6 6g71 in the 86- 87 mitsubishi debonair. The link below has better pictures of the supercharger

We need more members from Australia, them folks have access to some unseen factory equipment here in the states. I can imagine the wrecking yards there have a wonderland of performance gear we don't have. Just not talking about having the steering wheels on the wrong side either. :lmao:
