Weber Air Cleaner Adapter??

Is there such a thing? I would like to use the stock air cleaner on the Weber carb to keep an OEM look in the engine bay...

If there is, I haven't seen one. I'm going for the same look. I think the OEM air cleaner is a much better design than the boxy filter because it draws cool air from the front of the engine bay. The boxy filter looks cheesy.

Speaking of cheesy, I was going to get an old heavy gauge pie tin (the kind grandma used, not the kind from the dollar store), cut out the bottom of the air cleaner and weld it in so it acts as a riser, so you can bolt the air cleaner to the valve cover the way it should be. Would be invisible if done right.

Also looks very similar to this from Weber Carbs Direct, the fake Weber dealers. Except it's $20 here. At least this has no moving parts. Will take some measurements tonight.

I measured an inner diameter of just over 2.75" or about 72mm on my air cleaner (G63B). What did you get?

There is a thread on here somewhere where a guy took his stock cleaner and cut out the pattern for the weber and stuck it on there. Looked stock after it was done. Use the google site search bar at the top. It will also search the archive.

I couldn't find the thread you were talking about in the archives but I'll keep looking.

I saw there was a ~1.5" gap between the air cleaner mounting flush on the valve cover and the top of the carb. I'm going to order the Suzuki adapter (same as the $20 one from WCD) and see how it fits. If it doesn't really work, it's only $20 lost. The opening on the adapter is smaller than the opening on the air cleaner but only by a small margin, about 5.5mm. I guess I could port match the openings with a Dremel if I wanted to while keeping the bridge for the wingnut stud.

Air filter adapter for all DGV/DGEV/DGAV/DGAS/DGEV carburetors. This adapter allows for the installation of certain OEM air filter housings to the WEBER carburetor. The circular mounting flange is 2-5/16" outside diameter (58mm). When installed, the top surface on which the air filter housing rests is 1-1/2" higher than the air filter mounting flange on the WEBER carburetor.

I have one that has a piece that sticks up from the adaptor. The main problem with the rectangular filters that come with a Weber is that they are too short to let the carb breath. Geronimo has a 4inch tall oval filter assembly that let's the carb pull air straight in air does not like to make 270degree turns to get to the carb inlet.

For a downdraft carb like the Weber, it seems like the K&N boxy filter is one of the worst designs possible because it doesn't actually let the air draft, you know, downwards. The top is blocked off with the chrome cover.

Just an observation here on this one. Using a directly exposed filter element like the rectangular K & N style things are a step backwards in performance. They improve throttle response but kill torque and also have the negative effect of drawing in the hot air from the surrounding engine bay. Some filters like the foam style element filters are barely capable of keeping out rocks and sticks (they shrink as they get older, plus if you're unfortunate enough to have a backfire through the carby it will roast the foam - causing charred chunks of foam to drop into the carby throats)

Looks like that adapter will work. But I have a question about hood clearance?

Will the air cleaner clear the hood with that adapter installed?

Still haven't gotten around to this. But if everything goes according to plan (hahahaha), it should mount flush and bolt to the valve cover just like stock.

Fits fine. Even though I have a cowl hood it still is under the stock hood area by a couple in. Not sure but I think the manufacture has done some homework for the adapter to fit without cutting a hole in a hood.

So I ended up buying the suzuki adapter... probably would have worked, but my weber is a DFEV, and the thing doesn't fit the carb. Oh well. I may end up fabbing something up myself.

It shouldn't be that hard to modify the factory air filter but the trick is getting the filter box height correct so all the mount holes remain aligned when it's bolted back down. I'd get a factory box from a JY and butcher it so it can be jigged until it seals to the Weber and isn't being pulled out of shape. A scrap piece of alu sheeting for the adapter and a squirt of RTV silicon will seal it up airtight.
