5 Speed Trans

My old trans went out when I was traveling back to SC from tennesee it had lots of miles on it it was orignal. I got it home with my cuzns towbar but anyways I pulled my trans out of my truck and it poured out red ATF and I went to get another trans out of the junkyard and it poured out red ATF as well but the trans is doing fine in my truck that I pulled out of the junkyard I put ATF back into it. My question is basically is ATF safe for my trans and was that am I surpose to be using?

Atf sounds like murder to a 5 spd in my book....maybe Im wrong but gear oil is a whole lot thicker and helps protect the gears from load.

you need 2.6 qt's of SAE 80/90W GL5 Gear Oil (Says the Book). ATF doesn't lube well enough, it's basically hydraulic fluid, not a lubricant.
