so i was at the local JY just walking around and saw this cool bent shifter from a 1st GEN RX7 and thought how cool it would look in the max so i yanked it and started the custom work. i think it turned out great!!

Nice work! The geometry looks like it's nearly spot on. Did you need to modify anything to adapt it?

well our trucks much like every 80's car has the shifter held on with some type of rubber and glue. for our stock shifters you have to remove the snap ring and heat it up with a torch and the chrome shaft will slide right off. i did the same for both, cleaned up the ends and filled the chrome end of the shifter with some JB WELD stick paste, and stuck it on and let it set for a min then i could position it where i wanted it to sit and let it sit up. after that i took it off and turned it upside down and mixed traditional runny two part JB WELD and filled it up to the top and let it cure. it's ROCK SOLID!

Looks factory. I want to do this to mine. Is the boot from the RX-7 too?

finally got around to finishing my little shifter project. the boot came out pretty nice i think, i still have to tuck it under the edge of the carpet so none of the staples will show and it will look like the leather just comes strait up from the carpet. but the trans still has to come out for the build.

I got one of those shifter boots (hehe!) Just a suggestion. Find a chrome boot bezel from a car accessory shop to hold the shift boot down - it'll look nicer than the staples.

ummm the stapled part still has to be tucked under that carpet.....did you even read the post before you commented?

Err, okay. My bad. Might still want a bezel to keep the carpet from rolling up once it's tucked up over the edges of the shifter boot. Have you vinyl sprayed the dash as well? Looks black (might only be glare/camera angle).

Well I used the factory rubber boot and just draped and stapled the leather one on top of it and stapled it around the edges. The factory boot has a 1 inch lip that goes between the carpet and the body that is held in with three screws. That is how I plan to re-attach it.

ok ok ok ok ok geezz you where totally right. it ate at me and ate at me so i tucked my boot into the carpet and it looked like ASS total and complete ASS lol. sooooo i while i was pulling it back out i took a look at the ring that sits under the carpet that holds the boot down with three screws and and i pulled it out and BAM there it was! perfect! painted it black, tucked it around my boot and i will be running some longer black screws to hold it down. thanks for the push Geezer!

Don't sweat it dude. When you are going for that 'spartan' look and don't have a centre console to hide all the evils going on around the shifter hole in the trans tunnel, whatever you do is gonna be on show for every man and his dog when they look in there. btw - looks pretty darn good now!

I wonder if a short shifter from a first gen RX-7 would work, too?

I doubt it. They are a one piece unit and I took a torch to the stock one to get it into two pieces (read earlier posts). And the RX7 shifter was never a direct bolt over
