View Full Version : Switched Addiction
Well I had a build thread on the old board called Project Mighty Simple.
I will be changing the name of my project. I am changing the name because this was just gonna be a simple bag and drive daily type of build since it is my first. But i started getting creative and getting ideas and wanting to go all out on this. I STILL HAVENT FOUND A NEW NAME TO FIT...
Also gonna copy and paste all my post from the last thread to keep everyone up to date.
Please feel free to comment, criticize, like, dis-like, etc. Please be open, honest, etc. I really want to hear what everyone has to say about my first build. This is very important to me. Enjoy
I used to work for a welding company where i learned to fit, fab, and weld. So i am taking that knowledge and my passion and love for custom mini trucks and bringing it together in this build.
Thanks for looking.
1995 mighty max
ok everyone. here is a lot of catching up..
my name is kenny and I bought this truck from a friend of mine for $200. IT WAS BONE STOCK WITH ONLY 150K ON IT. MINT INSIDE AND OUT. I HAVE ANOTHER ONE THAT I AM PICKING UP IN A FEW WEEKS... Drove it for 2 weeks and then had it dropped off at AN OLD?EX FRIEND. He was to do the work and he did work on it. But he did a very poor job at everything such as---BAD WELDS- CROOKED TABS- ONE OF MY CROSS MEMBERS WAS ALL LEANING AND SHIT. BAG PLATES AND GUSSETS LOOK LIKE?....? WELL I DONT KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE.
Well me and that guy had a falling out and i brought my truck home and started re-doing it. I should have just started it and done it myself. Since bringing it home i have done a lot of grinding out welds, and rewelding them. (that is one skill that i am fairly good at. used to work for a welding company and learned to weld on pipe.) Had to add cross members and i re did how my tanks were mounted.--It has taken me almost 3 months to go over all the work that was screwed up...and i am still finding small things i need to do.-HERE ARE SOME PICS OF HIS WELDING---->http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p407/lkaf84/project%20mighty%20max/mightymaxrear002.jpg

So far since i got it safe at home i have removed the bed and cab. I removed the motor and tranny and that was sold--only 150k original too.

-i then stripped the frame down to well just the frame--nothing but frame rails and crossmembers-
-i z'd the frame and got it all finished up
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p407/lkaf84/project%20mighty%20max/cameramisc159.jpg
-i went back over 80% of the truck --GRINDING OUT and rewelding all the bad stuff that was left behind--left weld is my finished..top was his and the right one is how i ground his out..

-fixed one of my lower bars- he welded it with the threaded end in and it seized in the bar and it was crooked----
-i have my lower control arms now- i ordered them from DHP.
http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p407/lkaf84/project%20mighty%20max/cameramisc157.jpg
-Ordered some more tabs and adj. link ends--got them waiting
got a little done today. ground out a few welds and cut up some plates. Gonna be plating crossmember seems and a few places on the c notch this weekend.
also did a test fit on my new lcas.well just the drivers side...very simple to set up and install. might atleast get the drivers side done this weekend.
I have a friend of mine that just got a standard cab mazda and he is wanting to by my bag kit--(i am upgrading and gonna piece a kit together) AND HAVE ME DO THE FRONT ASAP..well atleast get it ready so that it just needs the bags put in.
Ill have plenty of pics throughout the weekend and will be updating alot aswell.
thanks for looking........
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
made some more progress and decided to stuff a sbc in this thing when it comes to that point...
recently i have been working on making my own upper control arm mounts. i have the basic design down and got the passenger side welded up and moving onto the drivers side. i still need to gusset and strengthen. then onto the bag plates and gussets. i have to reweld some of the pass. side still not happy with the looks of it.
i cut out the passenger side motor mount since they are no longer needed and will get to the drivers side tomorrow morning before work.
here are some pics of my work...this is my first time doing anything this in depth when it comes to building a truck. so far so good i think. let me know what you guys think.
good or bad...ok...different etc. please be honest..you wont hurt my feelings i promise.

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand the consept of the square tubing designed like that. Also, removing the engine mounts tells me you won't be using the 2.4 anymore, or you are going to do a body drop and modify where the engine sits in the bay.
the square tubing is used to mock up and fab to the original two bolt holes that are from the factory locations. it looks like it does because its just scrap pieces that i had and didnt want to waste the money on buying more.... There are many other ways to do this. This being my first build that is this far in depth i chose to go this route.
this keeps the two points in the right spots while i build to them and come up with my design. then allows me to build them and not lose the original positions.
the motor mounts were removed because i am going with a sbc once i am done and satisfied with my frame and all its work still to come.
I am going to body drop it to the pinch...well atleast to the pinch but most likely to the rockers. I also z'd the frame. this helps with laying out ..it brings the cross member and the steering linkage components that are below the frame to be raised up so the truck truly lays out and doesnt rest on the components that are naturally below the frame rails.
4doorciv wrote:
Ah. Okay. I was wondering about the design. Have you given any thoughts on rolling the pinch? Also I remember a few builds on mightyd50 that layed frame without z-ing it. They pie cut the upper and lower control arms, and that's all I remember. It was a while ago.
pie cutting is to keep your ball joints from binding which helps with laying out or getting lift..depending on which way you cut them... i have never seen one of these in person that has layed on the frame and only the frame with out work... Truly laying frame flat with no ugly as rake.... and not sitting on anything else. ----without alot of work to steering components crossmembes....
---i have heard that some years are different ...idk about all of them...just mine...i had to z it so it would lay FLAT AND EVEN and not on the steering components..
thanks for looking
pennyman1 wrote:
The Ram50/MM frame needs to be z'd to lay totally flat because the front crossmember sits too low in relation to the rear, causing the front to sit higher than the rear. Raising the front crossmember puts the bottom of the crossmember flush with the frame. Z'ing and new carrier and tranny crossmembers will make the frame totally flat side to side and front to rear. Definately not for the novice; btw great work on all the mods, much more than I can do. That's why I have friends that build race cars make the parts i need, it's worth it to be safe to me.
thanks for the help on clearing that up....and on the "SAFE" part i wouldnt do this stuff if i didnt have the know how and understanding of welding and fabbing. It was my job to weld, fit, and fab up structural and pipe. But yeah i get what you are saying. And thanks for reminding me to keep safety in my build. For others around me when its time.
Thanks for looking and all of your input..
4doorciv wrote:
Makes sense. Maybe that's what the guy did. Oh well. Please keep up the good work.
yeah most likely did. Thanks for looking and all of your input and questions. Please keep them coming..this is all a learning experience to me--the building a truck part atleast..

I have a question; what did you get the tubular control arms for? Are they stock geometry and just stronger, better built units?
The only thing I have concerns about with my truck is the size and strength of the ball joins and other front suspension components. Ther's not much I plan to do about that except install all new stuff, and not try to corner hard (that's what my '86 D150 is for).
So I was just curious...

originally i was gonna go with stock lca's but highly modified. I had a guy who was doing the work and he pretty much ruined one of them and i couldnt find any. so i purchased them. At that time i was not planning on going all out like i am and build it myself
the tubular lowers have 0 degree ball joint angle. helps with laying out. stock length. They can be built shorter, longer, adjustable, etc.
They are quite beefy. Install is easy. Naturally triangulated.
i needed ball joints anyway and would have had to triangulate my lowers ..so by the time i bought stock lowers, ball joints, stuff to triangulate, and did the work--i pretty much bought new tubulars. so i did.
Mike at www.dallashotrodparts.com can help you out... uppers and lowers, however you want them.....and other stuff.

Thanks! I'll look him up when I get ready to go for the front end stuff.
well everyone i am here to say that i have renamed my project/truck---- this is why....
it started off as just bag it and drag it...i got into some trouble...a dui and lost my license. I also was going back to old habits and they (drugs) started to interfere with my life--family, finances, work, truck, etc...i decided to go all out on this build which is my first full out build. I am dedicating this to myself...it is part of my motivation to stay clean and sober and be healthy
i gave up everything and decided to live a clean sober and healthy life. I have been clean and sober for a little of 3 months.
But...i replaced those bad addictions with another....my truck! So the new name is "Switched Addiction". Its so perfect for me and my situation.
Well there are no updates since i am doing a major clean up on the garage and need to get a few things in order..well a gameplan...
THANKS FOR LOOKING
Is there anyway to change this title so it will show new name instead of old

Congratulations on staying sober. I haven't experienced anything of an addiction other then workaholic. Alcohol to me has it's own reason, the morning after, it's really hard to work. I'm very sluggish and forgot small things and hoping they stay small things that don't end up burning any motors. Drugs, I can get the same feeling from adrenalin. And can do without the addiction part. And becides, I can't afford a bad habit for very long with my expenses.

Well guys i am gonna pack up some parts and do some more cleaning, going to look for a narrower rear end. I know to look for older yota or pathfinder but that is it. I want to keep it six lug. Get it a little narrower. And gonna do disc brakes. And the older yota and pathfinder comes stock with all that i need..
Any one have any help for me.....
i have to research to see what else i can use that is different from what i know and gives me my options.

^^^well arent you blessed....must be nice...i have a disease and i just simply cant drink or use drugs. My mothers side of my family had a lot of drinkers. A few of them were diagnosed with alcoholism. They all died from it along with liver problems. My mom died before she ever had a chacnce to realize there was a problem. she was 21...
My therapist and counselor says that i recieved this disease and that it is hereditary..its severe...
I told here she was fucking crazy...and quit everything since....

I would look into an Isuzu Rodeo rear end. 1997. They are Dana 44 with disk brake. Thats what I'm using. Then get off set rims. They are real close to the width of our trucks. there is not much that is more narrow then ours. Our trucks are only 4 foot wide on the inside of the durum's. It's NOT a direct swap over.

thanks for the name change... that really means alot.
i will check into the rear and i dont plan on buying and after market rims. just some stock chevy, gmc, or cadillacs...but that could change..
I am not worried about it being diect swap...i am bagging, backhalfing and 4 link, etc...no biggie.

Sorry man, your right. I don't see an edit button. Too used to speed hawaii forums. I stand corrected.

4doorciv--its cool man i was just making sure there wasnt a flaw that marty needed to know about..
thanks
well today i got the cab cleaned out besides seat column and dash. Getting ready for the body drop. Ill throw some pics up tomorrow when i get off work...
i have so many parts that i wont be needing since i am going with a SBC (small block chevy), and it will be automatic...
big tranny tunnel-carpet wont fit anymore..bench seat gone--going with buckets..
air box, fan shroud, all kinds of sensors, radiator, condenser, ill have a list of stuff im selling soon..
thanks for looking
today i made some good progress. I got the cab stripped down and the parts boxed up ready to be stored away for a long while.
I am at a point to where i am just bouncing around and doing all kinds of things. (Taking a break from the frame, link setup, etc.)-Most of them are just little things to prep for the next step. And a few little mods like shaving antenna, gas door, along with trying to find parts and sell parts.
Tomorrow i am gonna store my parts and strip the front end off and store that as well. Then go under the hood and remove all unnecessary items and get them ready to sell. I have good bit of stuff i will be selling...THINKING OF SELLING THE ENTIRE INTERIOR. Future plans are custom door panels, carpet, different seats, and a sheet metal dash or one out of an older car. Not sure of what exactly.
i have alot to put out there about whats next and other stuff involving my truck

Today i got a lot of stuff accomplished. I finished stripping the interior. Pulled the grille, headlights, radiator, and corner lights. Packed all of it away.
Covered the windows with paper and taped them up to protect them from the body drop process.
Pulled passenger side fender and removed the antenna set up. Started to shave the antenna hole. got a little hot and need to cut it back out and start over if i cant fix it.
Wish me luck.
I have a list of stuff that will be for sale...and it is growing ..possibly the complete interior...thinking of custom dash, seats, door panels, etc
PICS WILL BE UP TOMORROW OF MY PROGRESS.

shipping would be a little high...;)
I did alot today. for only having a little bit of time.
I cut off the rear bag mounts that were installed half ass by a guy who i had start setting up my bags...they were crooked and i hit one with a hammer after i cut out one little gusset and it fell off...
i almost got the fender all welded up..just a few more tacks and some minor shaping and its ready for some body work then temporary primer.
I cut a bigger section out instead of filling the little hole in. It seemed like it wasnt going to contour naturally by just filling in the little circle.
i also ordered my Ballistic rod end for my three link setup, along with some tube, bung, and jam nut. I got the biggest baddest one i could find. It allows up to 70 degrees of movement...Gonne be able to hit some major side to sides. I CANT WAIT TO BE ABLE TO HIT THE SWITCHES...
Started to make a list of things i am going to sell...it is really growing now
also got a lead on a mighty max that has been wrecked but has full hyro set up on it. missing grille, headlights, corners, needs alot of body work or new fender or two. Left my number and note on the front door of the house. And i got some friends checking with the neighbors.

only a few spots of each weld were getting penetration on the entire bag mount.
yeah i only put in a few hours yesterday..maybe 3.
i work on this every spare second of my life. Family, work, truck is all i do in life....
I got a good deal done today.
Welded in some temporary x-members so i could cut off the front frame horns and remove the transmission x-member. Got the transmission x-member out and it is now for sale.
Cleared the frame of everything such as fuel filter, hard lines, all tabs, brackets, etc.
hope to have the everything ready to start the body drop tomorrow. All i have left to do is mark out my cut lines, cut off front frame horns/mounts.
Then i have to decide whether to lay it out on the floor to perofrm the body drop or do it on jackstands.
I did the last one i did on jack stands. thinking of laying the frame on the ground or spacing it up about 1/2 inch off the floor Then perform the body drop.
WELL I WILL HAVE SOME PICS TOMORROW OF MY PROGRESS.
THANKS FOR LOOKING..

Are you going to keep the bed usable or are you going to make it into a case? We had an old member on here with the first gen bagged with a dump bed. That was pretty badass. With a body drop and airbag setup, automatically says chop the bed up.

the bed willlook stock when i am done it will just be really shallow. I dont know about a dump bed--im not a big fan of those.....but maybe that will change.
i was thinking of doing a tilt to the side. but i am not gonna even think of that ....i have too much stuff already on my plate...
oh and i have seen trucks bagged and never cut there bed at all...

Yeah. But if it's bagged, I'm sure you'll have a max load capacity anyway. ;) I need my bed to haul crap around. Whenever I het mines running.
the load weight is on two of the rear bags together... 2200lbs for each bag......so you actually gain from installing bags. thats what air bags were originally designed for..load support. with all four of my bags totaled up ..call it 8000 lbs. Thats way more than the truck and how much you can haul.
as far as room in the bed well im not building a truck to haul stuff ;) in im building a smooth simple truck to show and fullfill a dream and void in my life.
you can haul all kinds of stuff. and set up right it will tow and ride great.

Slope looks better and will make body drop less noticable inside cab

i agree with the sloped as well....you might get away with the carpet covering it back up...
thanks for the input guys. I think i am gonna go with the slope. I have done it this way on every body drop ive done and helped with. I was gonna go the other route just to be different and try something new.
no update today guys been trying to sell some mazda parts..not working out bout to trash the sh!t

I would first see what else is in the pile you can use on your project first. Kinda rummage through it while tossing away first.
I would first see what else is in the pile you can use on your project first. Kinda rummage through it while tossing away first.
the way i have my build planned...I dont see anything being good to me. just gonna keep the front clip and a few small items. but that still leaves me with a bunch of stuff....:wtf::shrug:
well guys its been a while since i updated. I havent done too much lately. Just a little here and there.
Since my last post i have got the entire floor cut out. Both front wheel wells cut out. I JUST SET THE CAB DOWN TO GET AN EYE FOR WHAT IT IS GONNA LOOK LIKE...SO PAY NO MIND TO THE OVERLAPS AND STUFF...... Nothing is final but at a good spot to take a break and do some much needed cleaning and some more organizing.
Next step is to raise cab up about 3 feet off the ground. Got to get rid of the pinch weld. SHOULD I CUT IT OFF NOW OR FOLD IT OVER AND EXTEND MY ROCKERS LIFESPAN? ANY OPINIONS. I JUST WANT TO HEAR WHAT YALL THINK...IT MATTERS..
Then clean up all areas that were cut and those that will be welding surfaces. Gonna pull the floor up, flip it over and clean it and prep it for welding.
After those 2 things are done i have to address 2 issues with my frame and uca mounts. I have to trim one of my plates on top where i z'd and one spot where my uca mounts just barely touch my steering box. Then its onto cutting the floor for the proper slope at the doors and some hand made braces/gussets for the floor to mount to the cab.

Here is one tip for you. Just keep the shop so you can park the wifes car inside every night, and I mean every night. Trust me on this. It makes for an easy life, and then you can spend as much time working on your "therapy" truck as you want. And tell her thats what you are now calling it. Then tell her it is keeping you from having PMS. (Pissed Man Syndrome) Then soon she start telling her friends she "let" you build it, and she called it the therapy truck. This is a good thing. Once it's to that point then you will have a free run to spend what you want and as much time as you like on it. You get the shop and she can have the house.... After that you can put a computer out there and never need to spend time in the house talking with her again. Life is SO good. Ive been with my wife for 16 years, holey crap I'm becoming an old truck guy. Help me....
camoit....that is very good thinking....i take it thats what is working for you...lol
Got some metal for my backhalf and body drop fillers yesterday....made a little progress on the cab floor...tomorrow gonna hit it hard AND TAKE SOME PICS.....

Even though I'll more than likely never be able to do something like this to my truck, I'm enjoying being able to go along for the ride as you build yours. As always, I look forward to any updates and photos you post.
I was wondering something, though. How long have you been working on your truck? Just asking out of curiosity.
i have been building this thing for about a year...but only get to actually work on it prolly at the most 10 hours a week thats pushing it. there have been times when i didnt even touch it for 2,3 weeks at a time. i took about 1 1/2 months of to do some stuff around the house too.
thanks for taking time to view my thread and post. this is my first build. It has been a dream to build my own mini truck for 12-13 years, now i am doing it.
I GOT SOME PICS AND UPDATE TO ADD TO MY THREAD....COMING SOON...

I'm glad you're getting to live your dream. No matter how long it takes, when you've finished it, you can stand back with a real sense of accomplishment and proudly say, "I did that."
I've been wanting to build mine for years, too, and if I ever get to where I'm able to, I'll be one happy camper. Right now, everything I do to mine is on a "need to" basis, instead of a "want to".
Look forward to checking out the updates.
Man...been a little while since i have had a real update. I still dont have much of one. Besides being real busy, i have been waiting on parts to show up at my door. I get tired of doing something and needing one more thing. So i have been collecting parts. I got about everything but a rear and tires. Tires are next..unless i stumble across a rear somewhere.
Progress hasnt been so good...i have been tired of using sawzalls, grinders, and stuff like that to make fillers and cut sh!t. So i am borrowing a plasma from a friend of mine,----just got to wait for the tips and shields i ordered to come in.....
I got one package today...7-gallon 8 port tank, upper and lower round bag brackets, and some flat tabs. Still waiting on one more package..that one contains 4-link tubing, rear and more front bag brackets, some 4 link bushings, and a few small pieces of hardware.
I got some pics of my metal i picked up also.
Well the floor is slowly getting put back in ...here are some pics of the progress. Its not much but here it is.

well guys i am gonna keep working on my truck when i can. BUT I AM GOING TO BE LETTING IT GO SOON IF MY CLAIM FOR ABANDONED TITLE COMES BACK WITH A GOOD RESULT. JUST GONNA TAKE 45 DAYS. I AM HAVING A HELL OF A TIME FINDING A TITLE FOR IT AND MY PROMOTION AT WORK TAKES ALOT OF MY TIME NOW.
SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION AND CRAZINESS.....THANKS TO MY WIFE AND HER ACTUALLY THINKING...I MIGHT JUST GET A TITLE ALOT EASIER THAN I THOUGHT...
Oh and i do have an update....cab fillers are about done. Just got 2 more to do. Then trim the frame where i z'd it and i can set it down for test fitment. Then back off to get rid of pinch weld and weld underneath....pics tomorrow evening.

I'm confused - you were selling the pieces, then you're still working on the cab... I assume the part sales are still on hold, or are they?!?

IM GLAD YOU POSTED SO I HAD A REASON TO REPLY...EVEN IF I PLAN TO SELL IT..I WILL WORK ON IT. ITS MINE AND IT IS MY FAVORITE TRUCK SO FAR ...AND AS CLOSE AS I HAVE CAME TO MY DREAM.....BUT I DOUBT SOMEONE IS GOING TO DRIVE TO VA TO PICK UP ALL THIS STUFF. BECAUSE I WILL NOT PART ANYTHING. ALL MUST GO.
AND YES NOW IM NOT SELLING IT SINCE MY WIFE SAYS TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT DMV HAS TO SAY ONCE I SUBMIT ABANDONED VEHICLE CLAIM.
its amazing how fast things change!!!! my wife told me to do a carfax......i did. it shows no activity since my friends friends ex-wife bought it then shortly after got a title loan on it. it doesnt show a lien up to the end of 2005.
so im giving it 45 more days....might not need to buy a truck just for a title.
sorry for the confusion.

that means alot to me buddy. thanks a ton. me and my wife were talking and she really wants me to finish this as well. she knows ill never be the same if i dont. and that i really have a passion for this type of thing.
im gonna just build it and worry about the title as i go. I JUST FILLED AN ABANDONED TITLE REQUEST OUT AND SUBMITTED IT. JUST GOT TO WAIT UNTILL SEPTEMBER 1st TO SEE IF IT GETS CLAIMED BY A PERSONAL OWNER. WHICH I TALKED TO THE OLD OWNERSEX-HUSBAND AND THAT IS A SLIM CHANCE.
THEN I HAVE TO WAIT 21 MORE DAYS TO SEE ABOUT THE LIEN SITUATION. IF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE LIEN WANT IT THEY HAVE TO COME GET IT...AND BY THE WAY IT SITS I DOUBT THEY WILL WANT IT.....LOL.
SO HOPEFULLY IT WORKS OUT FOR ME.
SO ILL KEEP ON CHIPPING AWAY AT IT WHEN I CAN AND JUST GO WITH THE FLOW...
THANKS FOR LOOKING
you know i sat and thought about it.....im am not going to get rid of this no matter what. Well unless someone from the company that has a lein on it COMES AND GETS IT OR IT IS CLAIMED BY LAST OWNER I KIND OF HAVE THAT PART COVERED...I TALKED TO THE LADIES EX HUSBAND SHOULD BE CLEAR THERE...LOL...which has been on for bout six years. But i doubt that will happen.....
WELL I MADE SOME PROGRESS TODAY...I GOT THE CAB ON THE FRAME...JUST GOT TO GET ALL THE WASHERS AND BOLTS SO I CAN BOLT IT DOWN. THEN I CAN WELD THE FRONT FRAME HORNS ON AND GET THAT DONE.
ONCE I HAVE THAT DONE ITS ONTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION---UPPERS, LOWERS, SPINDLES.
STAY TUNED FOR PICS...UPDATES....ETC...

Glad to hear you made some progress, and not just a little from the sound of it. That's awesome. I hope the title situation works out okay for you, which I believe it will. I'll be looking forward to more updates and pics ...when you get a chance, of course. ;)
Well between yesterday and today i got the cab on and am now deciding how i want to do the front frame horns. But until i get another bumper bracket for the side im on a stand still...i plan on making my own setup for the core support to sit on.
So that part is on hold till i get the bumper support for the side.
So until then i will be cutting all my pieces for the back part of the frame i plan on making. Ill make my mind up on a back half or just a notch back. Also cutting out plates for all the joints on my x-member that is just behind the cab.
Gonna tie up some loose ends, get some of my link started and assemble my drop spindles, small but needed progress.

Did u get your rims yet? Id like 2 know the measurements if you get a chance.
i got my rims...they are just some 17-7.5 steelies off a tahoe..nothing special not going big...ill have them bored out this week hopefully...my overall tire diameter for now will be--just at 24''. gonna set it up for a 25'' tire prolly. i dont do big rims...
what measurements do you want or need.......

I was wondering about the backspacing and offset. I have 05 silverado wheels. 17x7.5 with 235/45/17 tire. Not sure if they will tuck the front fenders. Since you are going with a similar wheel I figured Id see how it works out. Have you put them on already to check fitment at different ride heights? No hurry....it would be a lil while before I did anything. Just checking out of curiosity. Keep up the good work man!
ok these wheels are 17x7.5 they have a backspacing of about 5-3/8 backspacing and centerline is 4-1/4. so subtract the centerline from the backspacing and you get----1-1/8 that is about 28.5 mm. here is a link to a pic that has my same rims but in 18's on truck laying frame... tucks good...these should tuck in my truck like crazy....
most any gm wheel will tuck with the right size tire...are you bagged or just static? i have seen a few of our type of trucks with caddy, silverado, denali, etc and they tuck ok front and rear...
most are 17x7.5 with a 28-31-32 mm offset. some are 17x8 with the larger offset of 32.
check this site for build threads...you can see some different heights with different rims also...

small update:
got some more of the frame together, started on my ballistic rod end-welding in the bung hope to finish up the welding on the frame section i got together and finish rod end tomorrow.
IM HAVING A HELL OF A TIME FINDING A PLACE TO BORE OUT MY RIMS FOR LESS THAN 80 AN HOUR AT AN HOUR EACH WHEEL....THAT IS JUST CRAZY....THATS WHAT I GET FOR GOING WITH A GM STEEL WHEEL...OH WELL..
gonna have some pics sometime tomorrow.

You do realize that they really don't want to bore out those wheels, but if you really want to pay for it, they will. For that much, you can buy new wheels that fit without work. Besides that, once the steel wheel is cut like that, the center is going to be weak and flex like crazy unless they weld some plate in to add the strength back in. Or have the hubs turned down - its the safer solution.
everyone i talked to has no problem doing it....its just the fact that they are all priced at the same price. really high...
but i do understand on the strength part..i am gonna have the fronts plated so that it wont effect the offset and whatknot. thats not the hard part.
its the part that i really want these rims on my truck---> and if money gets them on there along with some more work on my end....oh well...im building this truck for me and to make myself happy.
i had the guy boring them look at them and he was very honest....He said "they are built to hold up a near 6,500 lb suv or 5,000 lb truck. You are putting them on a 3,200 lb truck ..i dont really see a problem." "And a nissan rim is bored out like that from the factory and have no strenght bends or curves..these have 3 (he holds up three fingers) the one where the factory gm hub would be, one where the rim bends in to the hub mounting surface, and 3 (he hold up 3 fingers again then points to my rims) the one that is where the rims starts outside of the hub mounting surface.
but i do agree and will def. plate the front.. thanks for the input...
Well i got some more done on the rear frame section, tires are waiting for me at my buddies shop. rims are getting bored out.
tomorrow i got some friends coming over..
to do list:
-assemble hubs with drop spindles
-assemble upper control arms
-finish welding out the section of frame i started
-look into making pieces for the rise in the frame for the rear
-make pieces to connect stock frame and section i made
-have my engineer friend do some math on the wheels and the weight find out if and what plates are needed for the weight of my truck, braking movements, etc
pics tomorrow

Gonna knock the frame out and set up 3-link...then onto the front end...

Hey everybody..i know its been a long time. But i have been super busy. --->Got a 2004 tahoe for 500 bucks...no title. only 78k. parting that out has been a job in itself. me and my dad got it, he is keeping the motor, trans, transfer, wheels and tires. i get the rest to sell and pocket the money.
Im keeping the front seats for my truck if they fit to my liking. My dad is going to swap out the drivetrain in is 03 silverado and give me his motor..5.3 vortech.
Bought some parts for the front end..wheel bearings and rotors, got to order the wheel seals, calipers, brackets, and pads this week.
I ALSO GOT THE TITLE...I FILED THE LOST TITLE PAPERWORK OUT AND WAITED...BAM I GOT A FRESH TITLE. THATS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR TO GET BACK TO WORK ON IT.
I have been bagging my friends quadcab dodge in my spare time...but now that i have my title its time to try to get this thing moving....
stay tuned..ill be chipping away at the ole max slowly but surely from here on out.

Congrats on getting the title.Real nice work so far on the truck, keep it up. I know the feeling of not getting stuff done, so far I have had mine in the shop for 11+ years just sitting there.
SO when's the First International MM/D/Ram 50 truck show and pizza fest??? and where are we holding it :D

ok guys....i kind of forgot about this thread...then again i havent dont a lot to the truck....been stock piling trucks and parts..
i got 2 ram 50's for 450! one is complete needs carb work and the title was lost but its gettable....the other is missing the front clip of the frame...but lots of good parts...
Too bad ill be cutting out the front clip of the other truck for mine..
Here is what happened. friend said he would bag my truck.(like 2years ago) he failed but cost me alot of money and ruined my uppers and lower control arms. I played hell trying to find them....so i bought tubular ones from DHP. i dont want them now that i have my parts truck and i these tubulars for trade/sale. But since i modified my x member so much in the process they will know longer take stock lowers. so i need another x member or i have to build one.
So i stopped working on the front untill i get rid of the DHP arms. I plan on getting the carb work on the one truck taken care of and just sticking the motor in my project. So now the front has taken a complete turn.
So now i am getting the rear set up done.... once i have the 3 link done i will bring my bed in and start getting that to fit, mount my air tank and other small things. Plans are to finish the rear as much as possible then pull it all apart and weld the bed and cab completely up from my body drop.
once i am that far ill plan further.
PICS ARE COMING......I GOT A FEW TO THROW UP JUST HAVE TO TRANSFER THEM ONTO LAPTOP.
THANKS FOR LOOKING
So
18681867well here are some pics of my latest progress. I hope to have my 3link all tacked in place and ready to weld out tomorrow nigh1866t. rear setup will be done by this weekend. then hope to get air tank mounted. then bring the bed in and get cutting on that...

i was gonna get all fancy and get a nice fuel cell..but because i was gonna run a small block in it. i think for now since i am going to be running a 2.0 out of a D50, ill prolly stick with stock tank......unless i sell my control arms.
the control arm money if for a fuel cell, new bushings for my uppers and lowers, and consumables for plasma and material...

Glad to see you're getting the ball rolling again on your ride. Awesome.
well here is a update..
i got most of my tabs welded up. Only have the 4 for the lower bars to weld out. I am gonna add some plates to the back side of the lower tabs to strengthen them some. I am gonna add some gussets to my upper tabs that are on the rear also.
My other progress --i added some more to my 3 link...gussets of sort. pic below....
next plans are to finish my tabs add my plates and gussets to the needed ones. Remove my old bag plates and redo some welds on the bushing sleeves. And cut off the excess pipe and cap the end of my center bar of my 3 link. Redo bag plates on bars then set up upper bag plates.

Well today i got a good bit done. I got my upper 3link bar all welded. Just have to cap the end off on the center piece and some clean up.
All the tabs are welded out on x-member and rear. They just need to be cleaned up.
I cut out my 2 gussets for the upper tabs on my rear and they are ready to be put on.
Lower bars are fixed and old bag plates have been removed.
TO DO:
box in the back side of the lower tabs on rear
weld on gussets for upper tabs
cap off 3-link piece
clean up rear, x-member, lower bars and upper link bar
Install bushings in lower bars
Put everything back together-
after those things comes gas and air tank mounting and bag plates.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------there is more but thats just the next couple of things before i do a good cleaning of the garage and some organizing. Then its time to take care of some random things that need to be done around the house and with my wifes expedition.
NEW PICS WILL BE UP SOON

hey man in your reasearch...what did ya come up with for rim offset and size to tuck ok..I remember you talking about it at one point in the past
i never really went to in depth with it once i found the steelies i got...any gm wheel or titan factory wheel should fit. thats on an 17 or 18...i think if you look back a page or 2 my offset and other numbers on my rims are there somewhere. i measured it out to be about a 1/2 inch between outside of wheel/tire and the bed...but with my body drop it gets closer but once i lose the inner fender of the bed and cut it out ill be good on clearance.
def. been a while.....i have been slowly working on my truck. got the rear almost done. just a few more plates and then its onto the air and gas tank mounts. i cycled the rear suspension...it it smooth and works like a charm. ill post up some videos and pics the next time i get out in the garage and work on it again. only putting a few hours a week into it now.....
thanks for looking... stay tuned for some new pics and vids....

You better be a good code welder to make the frame an air tank - the pressure needed to run airbags will blow the truck apart if it fails. Most air tanks sold are not certified either - it's a big gamble but worse if the air tank frame bends in a collision, it will have the air pressure to cause it to fail. I would not trust any 20+ year old frame to make a tank out of - too much stress over the years fatigues the metal.
camoit
04-08-2012, 08:17 PM
OH no I would not suggest using an old frame. If you built a new frame out of box tubing. Cut it, tack it, then tig it up.
Hey guys and girls...
I know its been a while. I have been slacking on keeping my project thread up to date. So here is an update. I havent done too much. But i am back at it full steam ahead and will have it rolling within a month if things go as planned.
I acquired the truck i was supposed to get with the hydraulics which ended being my 2.4 to stick back in it when the time comes. SBC plans are no longer my plans since i plan to daily this thing. Well i am taking that truck and putting it on the road until my project is ready for the motor.
So now i have 2 driveable parts trucks and future projects and a parts truck with no front clip.
I made it to a junk yard and scored some stock upper and lower control arms. Picked up a bunch of supplies, tools, and materials also.
I have the bed on and am halfway done with the welding. Within the week ill have it ready to pull off and finish. Once i have the bed ready to pull off and able to finish i will be hitting the front and bagging it. Along with welding the front frame horns and mounting bumper.
Here are a few pics of whats been going on...like i said not too much work ...but summer is a really hectic time for me since i work at a marina.

It takes forever to build a truck by yourself don't it.....

looking good l.k. I was wondering what was up with the truck and was going to post on here to ask but no need now lol. Keep up the good work.
ok everyone im back at it. i jumped from the bed to the front/engine x member. i did manage to get 2 fillers for the bed sides cut out. But i want to get this thing rolling so i can try to hit a show with it this year. Prolly go to Freak show agian this year.
i hope to have the x member built and in place then work on building lower control arm mounts. I think im gonna do them a little different than stock. Gonna install them just like a regular 4 link bushing would be installed since i am making the x member and all a little different than stock as well.
Ill have to mock it up and see how i like it and how well it bolts in and functions.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INPUT ON IF THIS WILL WORK. PLEASE CHIME IN AND THROW IDEAS, CONCERNS, QUESTIONS, ETC.

im using the stock control arm with stock bushings....well i want to atleast. i just was wondering if anyone had any input on mounting them between just 2 pieces of metal.----> i will be making something similar to stock set up on cross member but will just use a straight through bolt with the stock bushings with a tab style set up. If that doesnt seem to be right with me then i will be welding on some poly 4 link rod ends and use a tab style mount set up.
I dont see where i can use the rod ends...but i am open to ideas..i just dont quite grasp what you are saying..and i make everything myself when it comes to brackets, tabs, mounts, etc.
well i got a little further on my cross member
2x3 1/8'' tubing 1/4'' plate
have to cap the sides and add some plates to the joints and then i can tack it in place.

Give us a picture of the control arm please. If it's what I think it is then just make a hole new one from DOM tubing. If you did not want to go with rod ends then you can use uniballs.
the control arms are stock ....i am gonna triangulate them. i have new bushings that will be picked up tomorrow. Since i am building a new cross member i am gonna have to rebuild/make new mounts for the lower. Instead of having the hole in one side where the lca's mount- I am going to just sandwhich the lca's in between 2 pieces of metallike you would do a 4 link bushing.
I really dont need any help or input anymore....since i spent most of my day working on how to do this and work properly. It was very simple once i found out that the bushings are the same on each side of the control arm and flat as well. My bushings were so destroyed that i couldnt tell a single thing about them.
thanks for the input and info above though i will definitely my add those links to favorites.
Ill be making my own control arms later. i am actually practicing making jigs every once in a while. I have been slowly getting my table made...level stronger, spare plate, tabs, etc,
thanks kenny
i got some more done today. Started off by working on my crossmember for a little bit.Not long though. I ordered my lca bushings. I got my lowers stripped of all unnecessary objects. I also pulled my bed of since i have work to do to the backhalf still--->such as clean up my link bars, finish some welds. Basically tie up some loose ends.
The cab will be coming off since i have some loose ends involving it. Once cab and bed are off i have a clear shot aat the frame and can finish it out and start for prep prime and paint.
stay tuned for more--ILL HAVE SOME PICS TOMORROW OF MY PROGRESS!
man what a day busy busy with my fiance's birthday, shopping for her, and a little school shopping for some of our little ones. But even with all that i still got a little truck time in.
i worked on my cross member..almost got it done. I got all of my control arms cleaned up and ready to be cut up and set up for bags. Picked up my lca bushings. Went over a few more ideas on how to mount my lowers. For the most part i have it figured out and just need to pick up some bolts, washers, and nuts then drill some bigger holes in some tabs and get to it. I might pick up some sleeves to use with the stock bushings and have them work more like a 4 link bushing. But using bolts will work just fine. I just have to find the right size and its game time...
i am gonna try to get the cab off tomorrow and finish up all the loose ends on the frame so i can get this thing rolling..
stay tuned i will have pics soon enough. not too much to show for at the moment.....stay tuned
thanks for looking
Today i put in about 3 hrs on the truck..Got the bed moved and the cab off the frame. cleaned up where the frame was at and had a few buddys and my brother help me flip it over. I got a good bit of welding done. Ill have everything from the transmission cross member back welded out and ready to be primed and painted tomorrow night. Once i get that done i will work on the front cross member, lca mounts, and frame horns.
Once all that is done ill throw in a trans and block and work on getting the motor mounts and transmission cross member done.
As long as i keep at the pace i have been working at ill have the frame done and rolling ready for front bags very soon...stay tuned ill be throwing some pics up. be patient.
This being my first build and going all out like this....i must say i cant wait to build my next one..once this one is rolling ill start on my next one...i got some very interesting plans in mind. A heck of a lot different than this one.

I wish I had the skills and the time to do that level of work on a frame - I have neither right now...
yeah it is definitely time consuming. it has been just under 3 years since i started this project. With 5 kids full time job and all the side work i get its always late nights, and very little time to work on it. And when i do its when i am dead tired and dragging ass.
Keep in mind that this is my first build. I have bagged a few trucks and helped with z's body drops and other custom jobs but never anything this in depth.
thanks for looking
kenny
well today was a busy day for me..
i got my lowers all tacked up and ready to be welded out. Got lots of welding to do..once that is done i can move on to bagging the front.
pics still to come...thanks for looking
man...its been a while. i havent done too much. been working on bagging the front. about got it finished. just some welding, add a few gussetts and grinding left. i found an old 67 c10 which i will pull the dash, cluster, and possibly the column from..maybe even use the grille and headlights also...front bumper is a possibility.
after the front bags are done ill clean up the frame primer it and paint it then its onto finishing the welding on the cab and bed.....
stay tuned for pics and updates
I have alot of catching up to do. ill give a run down and some pics soon.

New screen name I see, let's see some updates on this man
Ill be getting back on it soon...money is tight..got a custody battle and work is slow. Gotta clean up the garage and get another welder..I have so many loose ends...finish welding the bed, cab, firewall, it needs a steering column brake lines and gas lines and the wiring done.
I'm gonna be rebuilding the rear end, doing all new brakes and hardware within the next week or so. Then get my steering all bolted up and a column mounted.
Then next plans are to clean up all the new brakes calipers etc up front and paint everything brake related. Once the steering, and brakes are done ill run my brake lines.
Then it's fuel pump, filter, lines for motor..if I don't have a welder by then ill rebuild my transmission then do a mild overhaul on my sbc350..set it in then its all welding and body work interior etc.
0Its gonna have 65 mustang bucket seats..67 c10 column and dash. It will be pretty much bone stock outside ...unless I go with the 67 c10 grille and smooth bumper...but that's all n the air at the moment..
