Hey all, Decided to finally start a build thread after lurking around a posting bits here and there. sorry if the title offends anyone but it seems very appropriate for the build because when i'm done it's literally going to have parts from many many different cars on it lol!

ahhhh the beginning, how i found it. the plan was very simple at first, just to get it up and running reliably so that i could put my Miata down for repairs and a possible LS1 swap, but that's a different story. i ended up buying if for $250 off a guy that worked for me out of his yard. he told he he had a import truck and that it was a mitsubishi and me being a import man myself had never seen one around here ever!

Very excellent, thehive! Nice caring work. I think I'm most impressed with taking on that dashboard fiasco. I really like the color scemes you chose for the door panels.

It's clear you're doing really awesome work, and thanks so much for taking the time to post photos...great photos.

Is "Rat Bastard" a referrence to Austin Powers?

LOL nooo, just that my truck is being built from lots of parts from lots of different cars and trucks, kinda pieced together but mostly mitsubishi parts

found these wheels at a local junk yard for $80 a decided to try and clean them up. they turned out quite nice i must say!

the dual carb fiasco: so this alll started with two photos and a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG search.

http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r568/thehive201/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0303_zps4817da2e.jpg (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/thehive201/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_0303_zps4817da2e.jpg.html)
so after coming across this first picture on the web it became clear that somewhere out there these motors came with dual carbs at one time, turns out that mitsubishi had made a sedan in the 80's called the "Sapporo" and they had a sport model called the "Sapporo GSR" that came with the dual carbs...ugly car though...
http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r568/thehive201/Mobile%20Uploads/uusikoti_zpsfb7a7f83.jpg (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/thehive201/media/Mobile%20Uploads/uusikoti_zpsfb7a7f83.jpg.html)
this set me on the path of wondering if anyone had ever tried putting dual webers on one, and they had!!......in Russia LOL

soooo after much searching and waiting and waiting i was very happy to get this on my door step!

I did find this out the other day after some searching that being that this is a 94 model the 4G64 in it is infact a 1G 7 bolt motor and not a 6 bolt like the motors of the past. and while some may consider this a kiss of death with the whole "crankwalk" issue, that was only the 2G 7 bolt motors and was due to a bead back of cranks from the factory that were cut to much on the thrust bearing and thus wore out to fast.

But being that i'm building a N/A set-up this deff has it's advantages for me. one being that the fact the 7 bolt crank, pistons, and rods are all wayyy lighter than the older 6 bolt counter parts. meaning that the motor should rev alot easier after some little tweaking on the inside. here's some pictures of a 6 bolt piston/rod next to a 7 bolt piston/rod, see for yourself.

also as it turns out the sport model has factory tinted door glass that has a bit of a green hue to it, and since the doors are already black the plan is to swap both the doors then have the windows tinted and re-install my new door panels on them. and while i'm at it i think i'm going to go ahead and swap over the black fenders with the cool chrome "Mitsubishi" emblems on the sides of them. so here they sit as of know ready to swap the doors whenever my father can get the time to give me a hand

i needed a good 2.4L for by build and was lucky enough to score a whole 1994 Mighty Max Sport less some parts from a fellow forum member by the name of MIHFISI and i thank him for the hook up! Anyone interested in a whole set of factory chrome sport rims with the centers caps?

Yes, that is my 1981 Dodge Challenger. They are definitely rare in the US. To my knowledge it is the only turbo 4G swapped Challenger/Sapporo in the country.
Nice build, I need as many ideas as i can get, planning on building my 89 Max over the winter.

thanks for the compliment on the parts!! that's why i call it the Rat Bastard max, so many parts from so many vehicles lol. the valve cover is off a early to mid 90's galant 2.0 they also came on some Colt wagons too. and the Header is from Australia

Thanks for the picture info, I look into that.

but for one, the lip is made from very very thick ABS like stated earlier, not fiberglass. And For two, ABS flexes and tears, not crack and break. And for three, the transdapt 2107 adapter is for a Datsun, not a Toyota. Sorry to rain on your parade.

Ok well if you don't want to break up the rim/cap set its cool. I'll live with out for a little while. LOL

However the Linkage is definately of interest to me. If I'm not mistaken the linkage is the same for the 2.0 and the 2.4.

If it is there and is in tact, please shoot me a PM with what you want for the part and the shipping. That I actually really need. as mine is non existent because it broke...

The Mitsubishi built Dodge Challenger was also marketted as the Mitsubishi Scorpion, the Sapporo and Sigma Galant GS/R (not 100% sure on the last one) They are a weird car. It's in no way a sports sedan - it has mediocre handling at best and is generally a bit of a slug performance wise. We got them here in Australia in both 2 litre and 2.6 litre naturally aspirated Astron engines (single carb only) but there were better optioned versions in production.

The oil coolers on the starquests had fitting on the cooler that screws right into the cooler and into a block between the oil filter and the engine block. The size of the cooler looks about the same size as the starquest, if not larger. That looks like the p/s cooler off a V6 truck 1 ton or with towing /hd package. On a second look , that is exactly like a starquest engine oil cooler. Be sure to flush it thoroughly to prevent contaminating your engine oil.

i also looked into getting the factory oil filter housings that had the ports made into it for the factory oil cooler lines but since it's for the FWD family of motors it won't work on ours:shakehead: so looks like i'm stuck using a sandwich adapter after all

1990 air to liquid oil filter housing for the eclipse/talon/laser. Only difference once bolted up that I see is that instead of having the filter poke out to the side on our rwd application it faces it towards the engine mount. Clears everything as far as I could tell. Also bolts up.

pennyman1
11-05-2014, 04:54 PM
get one from a starquest motor off of the starquest forum - it is the factory sandwich adaptor and an extended fitting to fit through the adaptor. it will give you the fittings for the cooler and a port for an oil pressure sensor. You can't get better than that - you could even run an bypass oil filter on the line to give better filtration to the oil for longer life.

Well my motor is a 94 4G64 making it a 7 bolt. I was looking hard at the EVO III oil housing for around $120 and it has the cooler hookups as well as the thermostatic oil relief valve. I'm not home to look at me trucks right now but correct my if I'm wrong, if I do go to a FWD oil housing won't that point the oil filter right into the alternator?

This is the housing i'm going to get, thanks 4doorciv, the oil filter looks like it will clear everything just fine :))
as you can see it has all the sensor hook up's as well as the two giant holes for in and out of the oil cooler, but what i like the most is that little brass colored valve that mother Mitsubishi has built into this housing, the thermostatic pressure valve. meaning oil will only flow into the cooler once it's reached a certain temp and not all the time like a sandwich filter

missed the part about you having the 2.4 motor - that part is s much better than the sandwich adaptor for the 2.6 - now I want to see if it would work on the 2.6. I assume you were talking to someone else about the lip, as I have a front air dam from my 1991 dogkota that I beat the snot out of it and after 10 years managed to slightly tear it under neath. Also made a deal with a fellow MM owner to swap my narrowblock 5-speed, trans plate, and 6-bolt flywheel for his Wideblock 5-speed, trans plate and 7-bolt flywheel so i can get my 4G64 swapped in (he wants to put a already built 4G63 turbo out a eclipse in his MM so it's a win win for us both)

Lol thanks, I'll take that as a compliment. Two of them are out with a buddy getting the before mentioned 225/60-15 g-force sports mounted and when I get them back I'll be able to put the rear down and see what the wheel gap is gonna be like. Another cool thing about running these fender flares is that they hang down about a inch over the wheel well, thus gaining you another inch of lowering look. Should look mean and staggered with 225/50's on the front and 225/60's on the back to start with

so you have them mounted to the truck axle in those photos?

thehive
12-24-2014, 09:43 AM
the last two are, both sets of axles are the same size and both are 28 spline but sadly the montero axles are a inch to long per axle and can't be used, they just push each other out of the might max LSD and axle housing. but the backing plate 4 bolts go right into the axle housing no problem. so right after Christmas i'm going to take both sets to a buddy and have him press my MM axles out of the drum backing plates and into the disk backing plates with some new bearings while we're in there. then i just have to get some new rotors and those nifty endlinks merrill came up with for the F-150 rear sway bar and my rear end is DONE.......for now:rolleyes:

A machine shop should be able to shorten and respline them for not much money - they look heavier than the truck ones...

thehive
12-24-2014, 10:26 AM
actually they are the exact same size, the neck down for the MM axles is just farther back. and if i make enough power out of my 2.4 to brake one of these i got bigger problems LOL. my buddy has a press and can swap them for free lol, can't beat that price. plus after it's done i get to take the montero axles with the MM backing plates back to the yard and get full credit $$$ to spend in the yard. so more free parts LOL

pennyman1
12-24-2014, 10:34 AM
or put the backing plates on the sell thread here if they are in good shape. Backing plates are hard to come by for these trucks - most are rotted away in the rust belt states.

12-24-2014, 10:58 AM
Do you foresee any problems with the parking brake or master cylinder?

pennyman1
12-24-2014, 11:07 AM
for best braking, you could use a montero master or starquest one - depends on the master cylinder mounting on the booster. 4wheel disc requires more fluid to work than disc /drum setup.

thehive
12-24-2014, 11:52 AM
The parking brake is cable operated on both systems and seeing the two together they use the same legth to operate the parking brake so the MM cables will work just fine. This rear disk set up uses the smaller drum system inside the disk hat as a parking brake too. I also took all the rear brake hard lines from the rubber body hose down to the axle to axle including the spliter block and will be swapping all of them over as well. We'll see how it turns out

alrighty, i realize it's been a while since i've done any kind of update but with me working on my tuck out in the open air old man winter has put some serious brakes on that unless it's a sunny sunny day LOL. so all i can do now is spend the green stuff and pile up the parts!!

more chrome! i got the door handles off line and saved the stock chrome tail lights by flitzing the sh*t out of them. i think they'll match the mazda mirrors well, i think the theme is going to be murdered out black with chrome accents everywhere

suspension adapting time! i took the tip from Rahtid and got some of these Belltech Nitro-drop front shocks for the ridiculous price of $10 a piece so i bought 2 sets for $40 and haven't looked back, you do have to cut the dust covers off but that's easy enough with a dremel

my solution to cutting off the metal covers was to buy a set of rubber boot's for $25 for 4 and install them and use the left over 2 on the rear for the toxic shocks that didn't come with any boots to begin with.
http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r568/thehive201/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender11_zps487bc059.jpg (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/thehive201/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender11_zps487bc059.jpg.html)

i also got my drop springs in too, and NOOO they are NOT Belltechs. gonna try a different company and see how they work. i have no clue what the length of the belltechs are but these are considerably shorter than the factory's. also i was happy to see that the nitro's come factory with a energy suspension bushing already in them!:))

Thank you for the heads up on them! Great price for a great shock. I was really surprised when I got the floor mats I knew they were for the Evo and I have no clue what I'm going to do with the two extra back mats but the two fronts fit the truck and my ralliart theme pretty well so I'm happy with them. I'm also intrested in these springs I've got, I got them from the same place I got the shocks but they seem like they may be shorter than the normal belltech drop springs, you wouldn't by chance know what the length of the belltech springs are do you?

yup factory original parts. they are soooo stiff! even the ball joints! i love the little covers that came on them! i am curious why someone drew a "tamper line" on them though. you know a line drawn on two objects to when taken apart and put back together if they don't line up you'll know it's been messed with. they did that with a black sharpie on the ball joints and covers and white dots on the shafts and bushings

I was looking at those wheels back when they were new but never bought a set - great retro look. It takes real talent to break a cam in a head like that. Makes me remember the time a local shop back in the early 80s ordered an axle truss for a full size 4wd without insurance. It arrived UPS - the ends were touching, and he was out the cost of the truss. He never ordered anything else without insurance again.

sooo i used to have a pop-up sunroof in a old S13 240sx that i used to have and i always loved it and the draft it provided with the windows cracked since i won't have any AC and a solid back glass with no slider. it was aftermarket and tinted and it never leaked on me so this prompted me to want to put one in ole Rat Bastard. But not just any would do, it had to fit the theme that i'm wanting to go with this thing. kinda a old skool late 80's early 90's inspired race truck with a modern touch and twist

AND BOY DID I STRIKE GOLD ON THIS ONE!!!! i'll let most of the photo's speak for themselves but yes it's NOS never installed or used, and that is a solar powered fan!!

and your totally right Pennyman1, Fedex are some complete asshats sometimes. it all started when they lost my head and valve cover completely and just wanted to offer me how much i payed for it on ebay, and i TOTALLY refused. the reason why was because the head in question was a RARE 2.0 non-MCA fuel injected roller head that was only offered from 89-92. So i asked where the last place was that they scanned it and they said Nashville, and i said WELLLLLL i live about 35 min away from there and will be there this afternoon to search every box until i find mine. low and behold it turned up in no time, beat to shit....needless to say i got my stuff for free and ALL my money back and got to have some AWESOME colorful words with alot of Fedex wearhouse higher ups to their face with my broken stuff sitting at our feet in the warehouse.

Had a visit from the MOOG fairly from rockauto land yesterday. and i think i'm getting close to having everything to attack and replace/restore my whole front end suspension/steering!!
http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r568/thehive201/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender%2035_zpsidmsn7pi.jpg (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/thehive201/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender%2035_zpsidmsn7pi.jpg.html)

here is what all i ended up getting
idler arm x1
pitman arm x1
tie rod end, front outer x2
tie rod end, right inner x1
tie rod end, left inner x1
tie rod end adj. sleeves x2
lower ball joints x2
steering damper x1

i can already tell from comparing this "problem solver" idler arm to the original factory one that it is a WHOLE lot more beefier!! and has a better angle for the swing of the steering arm.
http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r568/thehive201/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender%2038_zpsffx8v9uy.jpg (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/thehive201/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FullSizeRender%2038_zpsffx8v9uy.jpg.html)

also has anyone ever used one of these steering dampers before? to be honest i've never owned a vehicle that had steering as old school as this ones is but i've heard that when you go to wider rims and tires (like the 15x8.5's that i have) you need a demper to cut down on wheel shimmy at high speeds. thoughts? experiences?

I ran a steering stabilizer on my 85 Ram 50 Royal 2wd lifted 3" with springs and ran 225-60-14 on 14 x 8 rims - it makes a world of difference and keeps the front end in one piece.

noahwins
03-08-2015, 06:10 PM
I've seen the Gabriel version of the steering stabilizer in their catalog and never knew what it was supposed to do on a truck. I know they're a bling bling farkle on sport bikes, supposedly to prevent speed wobble but I doubt many of the guys who have them track their bikes. Do they only helped lifted trucks only or would they help with lowered too?

pennyman1
03-08-2015, 06:18 PM
they help with any truck lifted or lowered with bigger rims and tires - I an about to put one on my Blackwood that developed a shimmy when I went to 20 x 9.5 rims with 275-45-20 tires. It will also keep from trashing the idler arm bushings.

thehive
03-08-2015, 08:28 PM
that's what i figured when i bought it. i know being lowered also puts stress on the steering just like a lifted truck even more so with my 15x8.5's wrapped in 225/60-15's so i figured i would give it a shot, won't really hang any lower than the cross member so i don't have to worry about scraping. to be honest this is one of the more "in-depth" steering and suspension set ups i've restored, SO MANY PARTS! i'm more use to a simple rack and pinion LOL

does it make the steering stiffer? like low turn speeds? i know the manual steering in these trucks can be a bear to work sometimes so i may get some beefy forearms out of this deal

pennyman1
03-10-2015, 05:29 PM
shouldn't even notice it - it is not that stiff of a shock to cause resistance.

BradMph
03-10-2015, 07:30 PM
I thought they were for larger 4x4 trucks that could possibly return a steering wheel spin and possibly hurt a wrist or even lose the control of the wheel from bumps during 4 wheeling.

Redneckmoparman
03-20-2015, 06:51 PM
Lifted vehicles typically use them for bumpsteer due to such durastic changes to steering geometry when you lift over 4" taller than stock. I imagine on a vehicle with much wider tires would also benifit from them, as it changes the geometry as well.

thehive
03-28-2015, 09:11 AM
That was my idea at least, the fact that i'm running such a wide low offset wheel and tire combo it would help a little bit with the bumpsteer. the weather has still been shitty here lately so i've just been working on other projects. but i am oohhh so close to getting this 4G64 out of the parts truck so i can start getting i apart

I also pittled around with these new energy suspension swaybar bushing mounts and ended up having to modify them a little bit because they didn't quite fit to my taste and were not level when bolted down. they send you the new mounts because the new energy suspension bushing is to big for the stock one.

Had a stroke of GREAT luck and picked up these two bad boys for a whopping $125!!!! $50 for the trans and $75 for the Diff!!! i was a little skeptical at first until i met the guy, maaannnn did he have some talent, he's a aircraft mechanic and used to have a raider and had sold it some time ago for his dodge power wagon projects and just had the left over parts.

First up, a really nice cleanly used wideblock 5-speed. shifted great thru all the gears great and the input shaft spun great thru all the gears as well

Next up, a factory LSD in the carrier with a set of the killer 4.62 gears in it from a raider. now i already have a PowerBrute LSD in my factory carrier with the 3.91's but i think i may just keep this and swap them out one day and see how i like it

gave the new transmission a much needed bath:

drained the oil out and was very glad to see it still a somewhat golden brown color. i also tried out my custom made shifter to see how it would mount up, i'm happy with it

i also spend a good chunk of time trying to find a upgraded source for a steering bushing but kept coming up short. mine was still very much usable but was getting dried out and starting to crack

then i remembered i had some 2 part epoxy adhesive from back in the day that would even make JB weld look like a childs toy. i mixed some up and coated the whole bushing (wearing gloves of course) and bent the bushing back and forth letting it work it's way down into the cracks and filling them. after letting it sit up and cure till it was tacky to the touch i smoothed it all out with some acetone on a rag and let it set up for the night. the next day i painted it up with some red paint to match the other energy suspension bushings and i must say i'm quite happy with the results

recovered these too from the left over front end parts, took me FOREVER to burn off the old bump stops with a torch but i had a purpose. i know most people just replace the lower bump stops that hold down the toe bar with two bolts and go about their day but i just didn't like that idea for two reasons.
1: if the bolts you use arn't the EXACT same size as the holes the toe bar can shift thus throwing your alignment out of whack and causing problems.
2: i like the plate that the two studs are attached too, seems to be stronger and a better hold down than just two bolts alone.

also worked a good bit on my brake upgrade, i will be switching to the dual piston front calipers from Montero as well as the full rear disk brake set up from axle to axle. and because of these massive upgrades to each corner i figured it was probably a good idea to upgrade to the Montero master cylinder as well. My factory Mighy Max one was a heavy cast iron unit with a 15/16th inch bore, and the newer Montero one was aluminum and had a bigger 1 inch bore which should lead to some much better pedal feel. i had to swap over and bend a few of the hardlines as well but nothing to complicated.

so...I can flip my solid disc barbeque plates and spindles from my '85 for a much later vented assemblies and hubs? My brakes are GARBAGE and being able to go to twin pistons will be a quantum leap improvement. I have a Cordia turbo master cylinder and booster so that should have that end of the deal covered.

Yes geezer, you can upgrade your wimpy 1st gen brakes with 2nd gen stuff, you just need 2nd gen spindles and all associated parts.

:woo: I like go, but I like stop too! I spotted a 2nd gen 2wd last time I was at the wrecker but they have a bad habit of turning stock over quickly - it had everything I would've needed to do the swap. You've done a great job on your front end upgrade thehive, this is another job I'll have to add to my to-do list. Are you going for braided hoses as well? They add that bit of extra bite.
