Flatbed...

I got bored and started looking at MMM's across the pond for ideas and came across the "UTE/flatbed" scene. I made this this weeked out of some DOM and recycled pallets with vinegar/steel wool stain. Opinions, be nice!

years ago I built a wooden stepside bed for Geronimo when the original bed rotted out. The outside had black plexi on it - bed built from 3/4 marine plywood. Never finished it because my now ex wife felt it wasn't safe. If I can find pics of it I will post them.

That is not actually a flat bed, so to say. Good idea though, keeps those things that might slide in a turn a little better chance of not ending up in an intersection.
Doesn't anyone extend the flat surface out back farther? Carry longer items and proportionate it with the trucks front half. Kind of looks too short, IMO. Little bang board would be cool.

Vinegar steel wool is used to ebonize or grey wood with high tannin ie oak, cedar of which I used neither so it turned out reddish grey when not wet. The length is actually same as BED as I used that dimension to ball park size. Yes Im designing a "head board" so to speak with my logo on the cnc plasma table.

Sounds cool... would like to see pics. I enjoy woodworking as much as steel fabrication so it was a way to incorporate both. Hope I get alot of attention as Ill be adding my logo soon somewhere in the design, as this was the intention to create something different that gets noticed.

CLAYCH, Yes in a weekend. I have bender, skill saw and had some black rattle cans. I wanna redesign some things so am fielding opinions on the RE-do!

Add stake side pockets and 2 rails tall. Use Trex from Home Depo. No splinters.

Thats it... 50/50 water/vinegar, steel wool(raw, ie no soap/sos pads), let sit for a few days vented, i filtered with colander and paper towels, then brush on. Woods like oak and cedar with lots of "tannin" turn grey or dark. I used old pine pallets and its reddish grey. Supposedly if you brew "strong" black tea and treat low tannin wood prior to vinegar it will help darken. As with all stains test first!

Did I see a front end BooBoo on that silver car next to your truck? lol. I know front bumpers and wheels didn't come that way from factory. Oh, there has to be a good story attached to this, especially if it's the wife's car. My wife always has a great story when something bumps into her car from out of nowhere. :shakehead:

Not the gf... The 17 year old son! He left gone 5 min and my phone rings, "kiddo is in the ditch" i say! Yep damp roads, car unsettled a bit, kid slams on brakes mid corner and car went straight into the only 4' tall rock in the entire damn ditch! "No I wasnt speeding"

His first car, ex and myself matched his cash a month prior on the Galant. Fresh timing and tune up on 2.4 galant... Runs great still despite the slight aerodynamic change and the bent cv axle made some interesting steering wheel input on the trip home!

The Aussies love these "trayback utes." I like yours but I'd get the shocks going in the same direction. Maybe put them both behind the axle and get those big black and white billboard Gabriel air shocks because they're visible. And maybe trailer fenders to clean up the rear. But it looks great.
