I pulled the old am/fm unit out of the my kids '84 D50. Every time you hit a bump, you would get a lot of static. Installed a Pioneer unit I had laying around. I soldered all the connections and then used shrink tubing on the joints and every thing powers up normally but I'm getting static over all the local stations and when playing cd's. I'm now thinking my problem is in the wiring harness. Any suggestion on anything I might be overlooking?

Bad ground connections - ground the radio to the body, not by using the ground in the wiring harness for the radio. If that doesn't fix it, check the alternator - bad diodes can cause static due to AC ripple. There are also filters you can put between the alternator and battery to get rid of static and noise from the alternator when charging. Be sure the grounds from the body are good, and that the firewall to block ground is intact.

Hey Cajun, how'd you find installing the stereo? What harness did you use? Have any pics? :P
