Welded Diff?

Has anyone ever welded a diff on a mighty max. I got a 2wd I 2x4 in it alot, and it really gets me ticked off when I get stuck and the diff puts all the power to the loose wheel. Im wondering how much different it is to drive, as it is also a daily driver.

It will definitely make it a little harder to drive around town, especially when its raining. Be careful about getting on the gas too hard when turning/cornering

Pretty sure one of the previous owners welded my spider gears together (haven't inspected it). I doubt they invested in a limited slip/posi unit considering how bad they treated the rest of the truck. Mine's a daily driver too, and it's not horrible driving around town at all. You get an occasional tire chirp when taking a sharp turn slowly in a parking lot and such. That and as droppedmitsu said, it sucks in the rain. The rear always wants to slide out when taking sharp turns on the wet road, so you really have to go slow around those. That's really the only downer, but if you drive cautious in the rain already then it's really not that much of a change to deal with..

get a lsd out of a 1st gen montero and do it right - welded diffs are for straight line acceleration like drag racing and will tear up the whole driveline with the added shock load of the welded diff. Saving a few bucks now will cost you bigtime later, and if you are pulling the diff anyways to weld it, it costs about 100 bucks to replace all the bearing and seals for the diff to do it right; then when it breaks something, you get to do it twice.

doubt if they ever made one for our trucks. The best locker ever made for our trucks was the Torsen diff - all gear locker and about indestructable. John Baker sold them in the early 80's for about $500 - a ton back then. Wish I'd had bought one though...

Or maybe dual E brake levers?? I might just try it, its kind of like a poor mans LSD. Use the stock lever as one and then maybe a lever to the immediate left to the seat?? Or something like that.

Yep, thats where I got the Idea from, the only issue is our local scrapyard (They are only a 1/4 miles from us) lost their dealers licence and they cannot allow anybody in unless they are dumping scrap metal, it sucks because they have 3 or 4 Mighty Max's and Ram 50's and one has a G63B, and I need the rear two cam towers. I think its just a matter of time until they open again though.

I know this is an old thread but just to help others out with a fix for this issue you might want to look into turning brakes. They are common in VW bugs and off road buggies. It's pretty much just two hand brakes mounted side by side so that you can grab one or both at the same time. This helps with turning control, hand braking, and as a side benefit you can lock up your free-spinning wheel to put the power to the wheel that needs it.

I just got one of these for my 2X4 wheeler for the same reasons you are looking to fix. And its about the same price a fab shop would charge you to do a welded diff.
