Are blocks different between the automatic and five-speed?

What I really trying to say. Can I bolt a auto or five speed on the same block? I know I have to change the flywheel, pedals, driveshaft, cross member, starter.

I don't if anyone would need all the parts for a 5 speed? I'm converting my truck to an automatic.

with an 80 2.6 it is a wide block (13.25" spacing between the lower mounting holes). You would need a auto tranny from a 87 up 2wd truck - it will be a 4sp OD tranny, so you will need a switch to activate the OD, and fabricate a cable kickdown for it. For a shifter, use one from a Montero or starion/conquest with an auto tranny. The neutral safety switch plugs into a connector under the carpet by the shifter - pullout the jumper plug and connect the switch.

The block is a 79. The tranny is from an 81. Would this combo work?

Engines:

1979–1982 2.0 L 4G52 I4, SOHC, 90-93 hp (67-69 kW)
This engine used a Narrow block design with a block spacing of 12.5 inches. Both automatic and 4 speed manuals are narrow block transmissions in these years.

1983–1989 2.0 L G63B I4, Carbureted SOHC, 90-93 hp (67-69 kW)
5 speed manual transmission engines and 83-86 automatics are narrow block design, ~12.5" lower bell housing bolt spacing. 87-89 Automatic transmission engines are wide block design, ~13.25" lower bell housing bolt spacing. Motors have a timing belt with engine i.d. plate located on pass. side of engine by water pump.

1979–1989 2.6 L G54B (4G54) I4, SOHC, 105 hp (78 kW)
Wide block design for all 5 spd and 87-89 automatics, ~13.25" lower bell housing bolt spacing. 79-86 automatics are narrow blocks with 12.5" spacing. Motors have a timing chain with engine i.d. plate located on pass. side of engine by water pump.

1983–1985 2.3 L 4D55T turbo diesel I4, 80-86 hp (61-64 kW) Wide block 13.25" lower bell housing bolt spacing. All motors were 5 speed manuals in the USA

1990–1996 2.4 L 4G64 I4, 116 hp (87 kW)
Wide block design for all transmissions, ~13.25" lower bell housing bolt spacing. All motors have a timing belt with engine i.d. plate located on pass. side of engine by water pump.

1990–1996 3.0 L 6G72 V6, 142 hp (106 kW)

Please add to / edit this information. Add what you can about the engine and how to determine what you have.
Weather it's a wide block, narrow block, where the marking are things like that.12.5 inches = Narrow, 13.25 inches = Wide
