if you want a Nissan engine go with a KA24de and add an ebay turbo kit. The SR20 is not as good as the kiddies think it is. Did a KA24de swap in a 92 Hardbody and with a junkyard diesel turbo and a $70.00 Ebay exhaust at 7 lbs of boost the thing is making around 250hp at the rear wheels with everything else stock. Doesn't even have a blow-off valve or an intercooler and uses a cheap external waste gate. Funny as hell when this stock looking Hardbody pulls away from the SR20det 240's,Most Skylines and leave the WRX's like their a 10 speed bike.

The nice thing about the KA24de is you can get them for around $200-$300 for a low mileage one that some kid has pulled out to drop in a SR20. and you can usually pick up the tranny for $25. The sad thing is a kid will get the SR20,RB( ) trans and its the same as the Truck KA trans except for the 5th gear (.67 OD- Car, .71 OD- Truck)

I built the truck for Under $1500 TOTAL as it came with a blown KA24e. Found a wrecked 93 240 got the engine, wiring and computer for $230. Pulled the factory harness apart end made it a stand alone to control just the engine. had to interface 4 wires into the truck for the Fuel,VSS,Ignition positive and constant positive to get it working.

ok that's sound cool what made you go with the ford v8 in the d50 why not a 4g63,or another type of engine

The only reason the SR20 is so popular is due to the aftermarket support. When you compare the SR20 turbo to the 4G63 turbo, it is down about 20kW in stock form. The valvetrains on them are weak and you'll here the Nissan guys admit it too.

There is plenty of aftermarket support for the 4g63t, if you want a turbo'd 4cyl that's where I'd head. If you just want the best bang for your buck throw a V8 in it.

Well at the time I built my truck it was cheaper to drop in a V8 then rebuild the original 2.0L or even finding a good used 4G as I built the truck in 1995. Canada didn't get Mitsubishi till 2002 so we had to go through Dodge to get parts. a 4G63 in 95 was either blown up beyond rebuild of you could get a crate engine for around $7000 for a long block then you would have to find a wrecked Dodge to get the wiring out of. To rebuild my stock 2.0L it was around $3500 where as a low mileage 302 with a trans was $550.00.

I agree with Geezer about the weak top end of the SR20 the only reason kids use them is they figure they can be "Drift Stars" just like in Japanese cartoons.

all things being relative Nissan engines go like this...... Up to 300hp KA over a SR, 300-500hp SR over a KA, 500+ Go back to the KA. Granted at 500+ hp you still spend stupid money for either but a 600Hp KA will cost you a few thousand dollars less then a SR but when you're talking about a $20,000 build Vs a $17,000 its penny's

thanks for the insight guys that's really helpful but I also have another dilemma as far as what kind of trans. automatics are great but I wanna have fun throwing the stick going thru the gears with the v8 what kind of manual trans would go good with the v8

With a V8 just go with a T5 or T56 as they are easy to find and come in both hydrolic or cable depending on what they cam out of. American Powertrain makes them for all domestic V-8's brand new with all the hardware you need to put them in. If you want to add a hydrolic clutch you can always get one from Wilwood for the peddle and master cylinder if you want to run a something other then a domestic V8

If you spent half of that on a 4G63 it would be a brutal monster. Would be a much simpler upgrade and finding a manual 5 speed to bolt it up to would be just as straight forward. My main concern with the V8 install would be weight distribution - that's a whole lot of extra metal to hang over your front cross member. I'd be wondering if it would require heavier rate springs/suspension upgrades.

Americans do quarters, not corners.

But if you do want a truck that can handle well, what about one of those all aluminum V8 215? The Brits get crazy numbers out of them in their Rovers.

hit up 77amc - I think he said he had an original 215 from the 60's sitting around... would use standard gm trannies...
