What turbo should I get to replace the turbo on my 84 ram 50 4d55? Or would I be better off rebuilding the original?

Sorry I don't have any advice for you. When my turbo died, I had it rebuilt.

would depend on the turbo. if you have the tc05-11b, i would replace it with a td05 turbo (tc05 have horrible bearing design)
if you have the td04-9b, i am very happy with my td04-15t billet i ordered from Kinugawa on ebay. Go to their volvo billet td04h 15t, contact them, ask for the turbo with a td04 not 4h turbine
"Billet Turbo Cartridge CHRA w/ Universal Cover Mitsubishi 4D56 Oil-Cool TD04-15T"
In reference, give them old item number 281573552494
was $350+12 shipping from Taiwan, got it in about a week. have been pushing it at 30psi for 1yr 3 months lol

EDIT-
Could try contacting them kando_dynamic (http://myworld.ebay.com/kando_dynamic/)

i saved a good portion ordering from their out of country ebay sales, ordered it with td04 not td04l, no hotside, no wastegate. that helped save 100 dollars. it bolts directly into the original hotside
