View Full Version : 4D55-T - I think my turbo's bad

I recently bought an 84 Ram 50 diesel and I'm started to do work on it. I just got my enormous California spec oil filter in the mail today so I got to work changing the oil. I pulled the inlet tube to the compressor to get access to the oil filter and I snapped some pictures of the wheel so I could see what condition it was in. Here is what I saw.

This wheel is bent pretty bad. There's also oil marks on the bearing housing.
Any advice? Rebuild, new turbo? I've heard of people putting Garrets on this engine.

if you replace the turbo i want your hotside lol
this is the same my td04-9b looked like after running 30psi and letting off throttle to fast, since you are tc05, you are non-wastegated, someone may have had fuel turned up and boost up at some point

I guess you can't just re-bend those straight can you, lol. Looks like you sucked a bug in there.
Do they sell new fans for turbos? or send it in for a rebuild. I would do some price checking to see which is the least costly and go that way.

They're not bent. I spoke to my friend who's an experienced diesel mechanic, he says that's how impellers were made back in the day. The more you know.

What you really want to do to check if it is bad is to gently rock the shaft of the compressor wheel up and down and see if there is excessive play. There will be a tiny bit but you don't want a lot of play. And don't use a lot of force or you can wear out the bushing/bearings.

i seriously hope you are joking lol, if not you should unfriend him and recommend everyone avoid his shop.
they were never produced bent
On another note, yes the 10a wheel is still available, but i would recommend having it rebuilt. If it was on a gas motor i would say just swap the wheel, but the diesel turns the turbo higher rpm than the gas

It's true. Many of the first turbos were crude.
Look at the Corvair. They looked like a coffee can connected to them.

if i recall correctly, those had the carb mounted on the front of the turbo, so fuel always spraying on the wheel, and non intercooled.

I am more worried about your oil filter. That is how the TC05-10a looks. That filter is an oem filter from before they painted them back in the 80's. Like most cheap 4d55 owners, it probably has not been changed in 50,000 miles and than they wonder why the engine is shot.

Why do you think bent blades are how it is suppose to be?

I just ordered that filter, I really hope it hasn't been sitting on a self longer than I've been alive.
I'm getting mixed info about this turbo, I mean the blades just look wrong but there's no shaft play.

Okay, vanes sloped in the wrong direction doesn't make sense, I'm not an engineer though.
I'm looking at some td04-09b turbos on ebay

They will not bolt on unless it says 4d55 d56

I don't see it. They look to be going the correct direction. Looks like a CW rotation. the housing normally gets lunched before them fins move.

DO NOT BUY UNLESS THEY ARE FOR THE 4d55 or 4d56 and have same shape exhaust connection and do not buy 299.00 turbo from china. Will last only 5k or less

Half of each blade is correct lol

They look similar but bolt pattern is different (3000gt uses a td04h 9b, will not work)
Also I agree, no Chinese on a diesel, look up run away diesels lol.

Not only are they bent, but they are bent unequally as well. Though I agree with Skullz, lol they are half right.

I'm rebuilding it now, I'm sending the wheel/shaft assembly out to be balanced. The old comp wheel was definitely wonky.
