1982 D-50 in Georgia

I was given a 1982 D-50 last week. Price was right.:))
It had two spark plugs broken off. #2 & #3
Extracted them, then pulled the head. Found cracks in the head in the #2 and #3 cylinders.http://www.mightyram50.net/vbulletin/images/icons/icon9.png
Threads for #3 cylinder got damaged.

looking for any information on rebuilding the Mikuni carb.
Do not want to take it apart blind.

That seems to be what everyone says, here.
But I, for one, like the challenges of the odd.
I did find a Chilton manual that had a section in it on the Mikuni and am at least going to give it a good attempt first.
If all else fails I will have the option of a Weber.
I had a pair of two-barrel Weber's on a Beetle I once owned.

The problem with the Mikuni is that it isn't an inherently crap carb but is complicated to rebuild and set. The old all alloy Mikunis were easy enough to tweak and if you were patient you could get them to run really nicely but they were restrictive (worse than the resin body carb depending on what engine you were using it on). The biggest hurdle is the air flow restriction in these carbs.

It is going on a 2.0 in a D-50.
It not running any races, just a cheap daily driver.

OOC, what kind of Mikuni does your 4G52 run? I've personally only ever seen all alloy carbs on the early astron 2 litre engines.

It does have the resin body, though.

You don't want that mikuni, it doesn't have the power that a weber can help give you. Also it is all inherited smoggy designed. Simplify your truck and clean the engine bay as well. Install a header and weber and that truck will be a different truck and get girls more too, lol. :P

You can get a Factory Service manual on eBay. I got mine for $15. I have the 85 with a Weber but the FSM has instructions for maintaining the carb in chapter 14. I assume they will be talking about the stock carb not the aftermarket Weber.

Float in Mikuni was bad and fuel shut-off solenoid not working.:(
Ordered a Weber kit.

Yep. That'll kill it. If you have read up on Weber kits and have bought one through a retailer that supplies genuine carbs, you'll be set.

Tracking info shows it delivered this afternoon.

do your self a solid when you go to put the weber on the intake use some red loc tight for the mounting studs that hold the plate to the intake or otherwise it will vibrate lose and you will have to go threw the pains of taking the weber apart to get to them. the mounting studs are the ones that hold the spacer to the intake they are allen screw heads .

look at the carb closely - if it is a black choke and stickers saying weber, send it back - it is a copy and will never work right. Real webers have cast weber in carb cover and beige / amber color choke.
