'84 Ram 50 and the headlights quit working. My son said he had seen the lights flicker a couple of times in the last week and now they won't come on. Running lights work and he says you can hear the relay click when you select running and then head lights. He checked the fuses also and they're good. He doesn't live nearby so I'm trying to diagnose the problem over the phone. Any suggestion/advice on where to start looking?

Is it possible the bulb has burned out?

Run a multi meter on the headlight socket and see if there's power. No power = dead relay or fuses (sometimes these things aren't visibly faulty), next bypass the headlight switch and see if you can get it to bridge a circuit. Lights go on = dead switch assembly.

If your headlight switch is on the turn signal handle (such as mine is), check the wire harness connector.
My headlight wire burned, I think from a previous short, causes my lights to go out.......touch the wire they come back on.
Mines a 84 also.

headlight bulb sockets can also go bad - wiggle the socket on the bulb with the lights turned on.
