Electric powersteering

Hey guys, so i was looking into power steering on my truck and found that some hot rod guys have been using the electronic power steering columns from a 02 to 07 saturn vue in their cars, can a more experienced member tell me if theres a way to make this work on our trucks?

I have suggested it before, but I have not looked at one to see if it is viable. The rack should be about the right size.

vast majority install them under the dash like oem tho. First time I seen one underhood

oh yeah you can do it. This is an evo column in my 91 MM with the GM EPS motor that most use. Haven't powered it up yet, but 100% confident. Just tacked in most pics, using a telescoping steering shaft to keep the Tilt function.

beware - the Saturn vue / gm electric power steering unit have a high intermediate shaft failure rate - in the cars the default failure when the shaft fails, is hard left to the stop. I have a friend that has fixed these in several cars - not a good feeling.

What cars come with an electric pump hydraulic assist? At least if it fails all that will happen is the steering will feel dead. It will mean you'd need to find a hydraulic steering box but you could hide all the plumbing remotely.

they used to make a dual cylinder hydraulic assist for 4wd trucks in the 60s and 70s. However most states outlawed them for safety reasons.

Durango and grand Cherokee have electric power steering motors mounted to the lower part of the frame. Not too sure where Nissan keeps their pumps but the newer ones are electric assist. Fords electric assist is the rack and pinion itself. When the ford one fails, it resembles a binding universal joint in the intermediate shaft with an addition of a loud noise. Lol.

The cobalt btw had a recall a few years ago with the motor itself. I forgot what to look for to identify the old motor vs the revised. The vue might be affected because of the design. The mailbu I think motor design was different.

...why is it that I get the general vibe electric assist is bad news? The number of cars mentioned with EAS faults is worrying at best. My sister inlaw has a Hyundai Tuscon with electric assist and @ 90 kph it does this weird thing where the steering assist can't decide what to do, so it 'chops' from one side to the other. Lots of fun on an undulating road :shakehead:

They are getting better. Lol. First batches always got issues. New ideas have their trial and errors. I don't recall having an issue with the dodge electric power steering within the first 30k miles. Then again the res for the epsf bottle usually seems bone dry before the first 3k miles.

If you have a stock power steering unit and you want it to feel lighter. All you do is have a hose made that has a smaller ID then stock.
That is how we change the feel on a race car. The smaller the ID the easier it is to turn.

I converted my 83' Ram 50 to electric power steering using an MR2 powering steering pump. Works really well. Probably my favorite modification so far. I did it because the mechanical belt driven pump was leaking and in the way of where I wanted to run my intercooler plumbing. I can post pics if anyone cares.

Post them up! Even if it wasn't the easiest mod to perform it can help solve issues like the ones you had with intercooler plumbing. Plus it's something different. :thumbup:
