This is the build of my 91 MM....Im not looking to go nuts with this build..been there before and it takes too much time and money....Im planning on just a basic bag job to lay frame on 18 inch rims. Id like to have it on the road again by spring...Ill be working on this pretty much on the weekends only. Id like to hear suggestions as i go. I have tons of experience with s10 but nothing like this as far as bags go. I think ive read about everything on the net and am ready to cut into it.
here are a few pics of it lowered on springs.....body needs some work but that will be for next year.....

If you've worked on s10 suspension, then these trucks are very close - hell, even the shocks are the same length front and rear and can be interchanged. Always wondered about swapping the spindles from an s10 to a d50 for more wheel and brake options though...

Are the upper ball joints press in...mine are so caked with crud I cant tell....lol..
I got the fenders off tonight, lowers removed, strut bar and sway bar gone... gonna remove uppers tomorrow, cut out for lower bag plate and plan my pocket cut...pics tomorrow....

o ya...boy were my lower bushings fried....they came out in 3 pieces....gonna order new in a minute.

Yea I replaced my lower bushings 6 months ago and they were done for lol, I'm sure everyone's truck on here could use a replacing if they havent done so. I'm pretty sure the upper b/j's are press in from what I can tell.

ask blindeyed. he just did ball joints on his truck.

Fordubishi
11-24-2011, 11:40 AM
the ball joints are easy to put in,they have a snap ring on the pin side. There is a small dot on the ball joint that lines up with a dot on the control arm.Just line the dots up and use a large socket or piece of pipe that is about the same size as the lip on the dome side of the ball joint, then tap it into the control arm. once their seated just install the snap ring on the pin side and you're done other then the grease boot.

Also Energy Suspension has lower, end link, strut rod, and rear leaf spring bushings if you want them in Polyurethane

Uppers are press in for all years - the lower bushings and strut rod bushings take a real beating on these trucks

Payrion
11-24-2011, 04:37 PM
so no snap ring easy out? like 2 posts above?

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/images/product_images/thumbs200/moog/K9372.jpg

this is the Moog upper ball joints as you see there is a snap ring. these are what I used in my rebuild. the ball joints are still press in but the ring is for added insurance.

im going to pick up some 1/4 " plate....What and for what reasons do people prefer upper floating cups or upper bag plate welded in or secured in some way......i measures and a 4 inch round welded to a round bag plate slightly offset would be great...i see no real need to secure the upper cup, floating should be fine...my first s10 was a floating upper cup.....just wanting some ideas

Fordubishi
11-25-2011, 01:46 PM
Here a couple pic's of how I did my front air that might give you some idea's

Payrion
11-25-2011, 06:24 PM
got the spring pockets cut out today...i didnt go all the way yet, still deciding what way om mounting the bag in the pocket.....have to wait til monday or so for metal....but cleaned up the lowers, started to clean the frame area around the pocket....here are a few pics..... I need my lower bushings to come in and get plate for lowers then i can finish the front...til then im gonna spend time with kerosene cleaning the front clip up good...

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj162/payrion/018.jpg
see the seam in the pocket...anyone cut it and re weld it to keep it from rubbing the bag? or should i just offset the cup if i go that route?

The top and bottom should be attached some how. Things like to move around. Even on a semi truck it is b bolted in place. It is only 1 or 2 bolts depending on the type of bag. If you loose air the bag can come out. Also some bags have a rubber bumper inside of them.

Payrion
11-25-2011, 07:26 PM
i hear ya but a lot of s10s have non bolted upper cups, my first truck had them. i know cando sells MM cups and if im correct they have no upper bolt. I always thought that too when the bag deflated it might come out but the truck weight and the pocket kept it all in place.

I opened the hole in the top of the shock tower to bolt the bag to the frame mount. The air lines run from the bottom of the lower control arm.

Plates welded to lower, with relocated shock mount

Air lines run through the X-member and then used fittings made to go through a bulkhead

love how those air lines are run through the x-member with hardline on the outside. Never seen it done that way before. I'm assuming the lines are soft inside the x-member to flex with the control arms correct?

camoit
11-26-2011, 10:05 PM
Thats how the custom guys are doing it. But they are running flexible copper inside of all the frame rails so you never see it at all. Some guys are slicing the frame length wise to install them. Then re-welding the frame.

i also pie cut the upper on the drivers size after mounting the lowers.....It looks like i can lay cross member with a 26 in tall rim/tire combo before the pie cut ball joint maxes out....Seem perfect to me since im only looking at an 18 inch rim...will weld up uppers tomorrow and maybe start on triangulating the lowers..gonna research making a tool to line up the lower control arm mount bolt and the triangulated arm mounting point....

how much of the uppers did you cut in the pie cut, and where did you cut them at to make it more level?

i cut them straight across about 3/4 to 1 inch behind the ball joint..i cut thru the humps, left the flat center alone, i then jacked up the spindle til it bent to the amount i needed, tacked it while it was in place, removed control arm and welded up..It will have a nice size gap to fill, Im planning on fish plating the sides to add strength.

jack up the assemble til you get the amount you want...remember to measure the engine cradle to ground...then measure the spindle to ground and subtract for the rim and tire combo you want to lay with...

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj162/payrion/010.jpg

remove arm again and weld it up..I weld inside and out....you'll have a big gap to fill, i always fish plate the sides...no pics of that cause i ran out of gas and wire...Ill snap some at that time

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj162/payrion/011.jpg

you might have to trim it some when jacking it up if the cut isn't a big enough gap..just trim as needed..

I added a circle plate to my lower control arms and cut the sides to match the arm, it was just something little to add, looks cool..Also mocked up the triangulation of the lowers again but no friggn wire...Got some templates made for the bag plate gussets and a backing plate...metal will be picked up tomorrow and ill be working on getting that all buttoned up..im hoping for this week to have it all together as far as front, ill test it out then break it down for powder and frame rail coat....Im sure i wont make my goal but im having fun at this....

Even though I'm not a fan a bagged trucks, the work going into your truck is pretty nice. I've been following along very quietly. The work seems to be well thought out, the quality of the work seems to be very good. I'll continue to follow along.

Now you just elevated your status. Like the color, and the thought behind it. Allways my biggest complaint of alot of bagged trucks is when people don't do the finish work.

How many times I've seen the fab left raw with rusty fingerprints and seams. Pinch welds hammered flat with golf balf sized hammer marks everywhere near the pinch. Inner fenders cut out with jagged edges, along with the bed, need a tetanitious shot just to go near the truck. Wiring left dangling and loose.

Glad to see that this truck will not be the victim of such carelessness

Payrion
12-27-2011, 02:14 PM
the truck will be far from finished when its on the road BUT it wont looked hacked...Im doing this in stages...since im on the suspension im gonna finish it out...I am a sheetmetal worker but have a small side powdercoating business called POWDER EFFECTZ so i cant leave the stuff looking like arse...I think almost everyone plans on finishing it off but the cost involved in just the fab work between all the grinding disks, cut off disks, welding gas and wire, the damn tools...it adds up then add the cost of GOOD coating or paint, the budget is blown before coating...im lucky to have a very nice pro setup and nice size oven and the talent to do this..plus im a person that refuses to have crap...
thanks again for the positive comments...

Have you looked in the tech section. There is a conversion in there. As for that fitting, does the alternator in your truck have a flat nose? You would need to look at the housing and ears. I can't see that thing making 110A at idle. No alternator makes that much at an idle. Makes for great marketing.

Payrion
01-15-2012, 01:59 PM
the swap we have is for a 70 amp alt..the 2 compressors im using are 70 amps total add a sound system, eletric fan....im way over the swap we have listed.

I got a new alt off ebay for my isuzu. I think it was 110amps vs. the stock 50. It ended up being for a different motor so they gave it to me for free. A little creative wiring and some flat plate and washers and I made it fit anyway. I'm pretty sure it was a delco remy alternator from a v6 isuzu. Might want to check them out. I'd imagine the mounting is pretty close to the mighty max's

Payrion
01-16-2012, 04:12 AM
i found a 90-94 4g63t alt for $110, its 140 amps...it works, just have to swap pulley. Man i would really like to have a 220 amp...nothings worse then lights dimming when the sir compressors come on, I fought that on my dime til i got a 220 amp alt.

pennyman1
01-16-2012, 05:16 PM
Mod some brackets and run a small case gm with 220 amp output. I run a 105 amp small case gm on my 1980 2.6, and have a 200 amp gm waiting to go on the turbo motor when it goes in.

mikeslowmax

fab up some brackets and run a york

pennyman1
01-16-2012, 05:43 PM
my 1980 had a york for the a/c compressor that laid it on its side above the alternator - its the bracket that was modded to run the small case gm. I even have a spare bracket somewhere I think.

camoit

You do know they make a compressor for diesel trucks that run off a v belt. And they are lubed by engine oil. You could run air tools off it then. And it will only kick in when the air is low. You could even put on a dryer and then your truck will make that cool whoosh noise like a big truck. You would have so much air you could install an air canon and fire crotchet balls at the bastard that cut you off.

ok guys back to this starter...since i last posted i bought about 6 ft of extensions and 6 swivels.....STILL NO LUCK!!!..soooo today i paid a mechanic from a very good speed shop down the street 25 bucks to stop by tonight after work to look at it for me.....he said he sees no good way to get to the starter unless i remove all the auto trans linkage, the tranny cooling lines, and even after that there is only 1 inch clearance on the top bolt to the fire wall....has anyone actually replaced a starter on a 2nd gen auto 2.4? ...im not kidding here, i have 6-8 hours of time trying to get to any bolt...
before i go ripping all the linkage and lines out im hoping some one who has done it chims in...i cant do anything else on the front til i do this, i want this done before i put the steering box back in.......the starter is right friggn there, i can almost lick it..lol

Payrion
02-08-2012, 04:32 PM
ok just went back out and i cannot remove the linkage, its attached by the lower bolt..wtf......so i decided im gonna hack the shit and cut out the fire wall near the bolts and patch it with friggn screws......i hate it, i know its a small thing but its gonna start to rust over time...If i can get motivation i might do it this weekend.

camoit
02-08-2012, 04:36 PM
So was the problem with the swivel it would not go on or you could not turn it? I know that some times you need to use a box end on there just to get the first 0.0011 of a turn. Just enough to make it go. I never had a second gen with an auto 2.4L. OH is there a rubber plug where the e brake cable goes through. Is there any way to use the hole there? Or make a hole and then fill it with an electrical knock out plug from home depot later on. Or a peace of 20 gage silicone in place to fill it. Anything???

Payrion
02-08-2012, 04:42 PM
i cant get to the bolts with any combo, too much stuff, yes i will try the lower bolt with the knock out for the e cable..thats what gave me the idea of holes in the FW....Im removing the e brake anyways so thats cool on the bottom bolt...man mitsu had a bad idea on these trucks when it comes to the starter....if all the linkage and fluid lines were not there i would have no problem, with the lower bolt at least....i cannot even get a box wrench near the upper bolt...Im a pretty mechanical person, not much i cant figure out.but this has made me loose a lot of interest in doing this project..funny how something so small does that...i know i have to get this before i move on. so i find myself not going out there cause i get so mad....

camoit
02-08-2012, 05:05 PM
I know what you mean. But like my project I just had to tell myself it's not going to get done by looking at it. And I do a lot of looking, then I tinker with it. Next thing I know it's done. I'm starting on the rework of the trailing arms on the rear end. Major changes. It's up in the air now. Not sure how far I will go tonight but well see.

DroppedMitsu
02-08-2012, 09:49 PM
I have a 2nd gen and had a 2.6 with an auto. I had no problem getting a socket on the starter bolts nor the top tranny bolts with the proper extensions and universal swivel joint. The 2.6 is pretty much tue same size as the 2.4, same with the auto tranny being pretty close to the same setup.

I never had any problems getting to mine, either. Then again, mine has the manual transmission (don't know if that makes any difference), and I've been fortunate to have access to a lift when mine needs work.

Anyway, I hope you can figure a way to get the bolts out before you get completely fed up and firebomb your truck. Good luck.

i hate the winter time so i always try to wait til then to mess with my hobbies....we get a short summer so i like to enjoy every bit i can ..but this year the steel mills are cranking out steel so i was busy as hell...not making steel, fixing machines out there...they say the economy is still shot...im thinking its going right now...we have 10 million of work out at 2 mills going on...They are hiring again and tons of projects hitting around here...
ANYWAYS...goal is to get this thing on the road by spring...BUT!!!! damn air compressor blew head gasket lastnight...need to order new...
