87 d50 needs more power... help?

hello, i have an 87 d50 (automatic) is there anyway i can make it faster that doesnt cost too much? i have muscular dystrophy and love vehicles, and especially my D50 (it was my first car) but i wish it had more power. its pretty slow. its all stock i saved it from a guys back yard. the only thing i put into it was a new fuel pump. it is a 2.6 that used to be a military truck. it only has 98xxx miles on it but it blew a head gasket and the metal ring around the cylinder messed up my head so im currently fixing that. any ideas how to turn my first truck from a slow wheelchair transporter into a speed demon???

See the post above yours for what can be done with these trucks with a 2.6 motor. A header, carb and a new cam will wake up the motor; don't expect 12 second 1/4 mle times though.
