21545Good Bike Rack: Well, after much research & tinkering, my truck is now a toy hauler... The dark blue bike is a 29er, it's tire has an inch or more clearance from the bed front... The two tie down straps are insurance and stop all movement of the bikes... The bikes clear the low overhead garage limits with three inches to spare... A link to the rack I bought from Amazon & photos follow...
Cheers

Very cool. I myself just throw mine in the back and off I go. I like yours though. :)

Nice bikes, good looking truck and great job on the mounts! I built a bike rack years ago for my D but not nearly as yours. Thanks for sharing.

:) You guys are making me feel really swell, thanks for all the kudos... I will make a profile "bike rack" photo album so you can see some construction details... Originally, I wanted to make a dirt cheap DIY bike rack with 2x4 wood laying on the bed floor... I soon realized that sometimes store bought items end up being cheaper & better than DIY... One example I can think of is a shattered mirror; no amount of wood glue to fix a million shards of glass will give a good reflection of your talent or face anytime soon... Same thing for me and a DIY bike rack; it was hard enough just figuring out how best to mount "it" on the truck... Made in China & Made in Taiwan is not always 100% bad or total junk; I like Made in USA if it's available, in this case, not... The Chinese are growing marijuana on the far side of the moon, yikes..! Well, just proves "Everything is not made in China"

Bought a cable & lock from Amazon; the bike rack has no locking features...

Slick! Do they come out easy if you want to haul something large?

Good question Giovanni89; Yes & No..!

The bike rack itself has quick release plastic knob wing nuts; easy enough to remove it quick from the truck...

The ends of the two DIY (cross pieces) 1" x 3" x 59 3/4" x 1/8" thick rectangle aluminum mounts are secured with three 5/16"-18 x 1 3/4" long bolts... Two of these bolts could be made quick release with a plastic knob wing nut but the third (outboard bolt) might not, it is close to the bed sheet metal... I put the outboard nut on the bottom to make assembly easier; the other two bolts have the nut on top... Perhaps the four outboard fastener assemblies could be made quick release by using a metal wing nut (if small enough..?) The only tools needed to remove the two cross mounts (twelve fastener assemblies) is a 3/8" drive ratchet with 1/2" deep well socket & one 1/2" combination wrench... I should upload some pics...
