I was putting a new clutch in my 80 D50 and after getting the trans back in I noticed a ball bearing on the floor. The floor was cleaned before I started the project last week. The carrier bearing was totally shot with no rubber left so I'm wondering if that could have been the last bearing in it.

Ok there is only one place where a single ball bearing is located - under the reversing light switch in the extension housing (unless it has blown apart a complete bearing race...) Really common and easy to lose when anyone removes the reversing switch. Lucky you found it.

IDK what year yours is, but the 1st gen 4 sp trans the ball is 5/16th. The OE ball was 8mm. I expect that would not have changed over time.
